Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) defeated the peloton and more than 5,000 feet of climbing in stage two of the Tour of the Gila. The Argentinean sprinter convincingly won the reduced-bunch sprint ahead of Alex Howes (Garmin-Holowekso Partners-Felt) and Rory Sutherland (OUCH pb Maxxis).

"My teammates took me to Sutherland's wheel but I saw that there was a really strong head wind so I was patient and waited to start my sprint," said Haedo. "Luis was very strong in the break away but he started cramping in the end. We were hoping to move him up further in the overall."

Race leader Levi Leipheimer (Mellow Johnny's) arrived to the finish line safely after a day marred with crashes. The Santa Rosa, California native maintained a 49-second time margin ahead of second placed Peter Stetina (Garmin-Holowesko Partners-Felt) and one minute ahead of third placed Chris Baldwin (Rock Racing).

"We are just going to keep doing what we can and trying out best," said Levi regarding his teammate Lance Armstrong and Chris Horner all-day efforts over mountains and through strong winds to bring back the lengthy breakaway. "The stages are short so I think it is a perfect way to taper the volume but keep some intensity."

A four-rider, mid-race breakaway missed succeeding to the finish line by one kilometre. The group included Sean Milne (Team Type 1), Floyd Landis (OUCH pb Maxxis), Caleb Fairley (Garmin-Holowesko Partners-Felt) and Luis Amaran (Colavita-Sutter Home) and gained a maximum of four minutes.

Amaran fell off the pace on the crest of the final climb with 16 kilometres to the finish. Milne made several bids at a solo victory, noting that Landis had proven to be the strongest rider in the break taking long pulls over the hills in his big ring. Fairley looked back and saw the peloton approaching fast and sat up while Milne made one last dig for glory but the peloton was motivated to see a field sprint and the pair was caught.

Sutherland's OUCH p/b Maxxis teammates drove the front of the peloton into the long-awaited right hand turn into the Fort Bayard start-finish area. With one kilometre to go the squad looked to have control of the final sprint and Sutherland made the first move with 300 metres to go. Haedo sensed that the strong head wind may play a part in the finale and waited patiently for his winning move with 100 metres to go.

"I passed about four guys in the last sprint, the headwind was so strong," said Howes, who hopes his U23 squad will capture a stage win after two strong second place finishes. "Haedo is a talented rider. He's the kind of guy that doesn't need too much either; maybe just one Hail Marry to get him up to the front and go for it. We are kind of banging our heads against the wall because we are right there and we just can't seem to pull it off."

Descending Pinos Altos

Another gorgeous day greeted the men's 175-rider peloton in Silver City, New Mexico. The stage two starting ascent out of Fort Bayard was just a taste of the climbing that was incorporated into the 128km road race. Strong winds gave the breakaway riders an additional opponent to fight against.

Kevin La Combe (Planet Energy) scooped up the first of two intermediate sprints to take the lead of the Tour of the Gila points jersey. La Combe and his two breakaway companions - Ben King (Trek-Livestrong) and Roman Van Ulden (Land Rover-Orbea) - broke away in the first few kilometres of the race and were later joined by Jeremy Vennell (Bissell) and Ian MacGregor (Team Type 1). Their quest to form the winning break came to an end on the long descent out of Pinos Altos.

The decisive move of the day was forced in an attempt to stay out of trouble on Gila National Forest's 'monstrous' descent. Sean Milne (Team Type 1) decided to stay out of harm's way and followed an attack from Caleb Fairley (Garmin-Holowekso Partners-Felt). Floyd Landis (OUCH pb Maxxis) and Luis Amaran (Colavita-Sutter Home) joined the break at the bottom of the descent and the four organised themselves quickly to form a two-minute lead.

A chase group of three - Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell), Michael Grabinger (Fly V Australia) and Bradley White (OUCH) - dangled between the lead group and the peloton for more 65 kilometres.

The gap from the leaders to the peloton grew to a dangerous four minutes, making Amaran the virtual leader on the road. But according to Leipheimer, his team did not receive enough radio information to know what the exact time differences were. Nonetheless, his Mellow Johnny's teammates Armstrong and Horner put forth a commanding effort to reduce the margin down to a mere 20 seconds heading into town.

"We got help from Kelly Benefit Strategies and from Bissell and Team B today," Leipheimer said. "Kelly Benefits was pretty professional today. They came up to help close the gap. In the end someone else won but I recognised their effort."

Tour of the Gila continues with the 25-kilometre Tyrone Time Trial. "Its going to hurt because we are at altitude and it is so windy," said Leipheimer. "But I think any time trial is good preparation for the bigger ones because you have to stay in practice of it. The warm up, concentration and the sensations of pushing yourself hard - You need to stay on top of that."

Grain takes Fort Bayard victory

Canada's Gina Grain (Webcor-Builders) was too quick for the other six riders in her group as she sprinted the stage two victory at the Tour of the Gila. Grain used her track sprinting experience to outpace second placed Catherine Cheatley (Colavita-Sutter Home) while race leader Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo Test Team) took third place.

"I'm feeling really good and climbing really well," said Grain, who cleared stage's two significant climbs without difficulty. "I jumped at 200 metres to go and when I looked back no one was really that close. But, it was such a hard day with the climbing and the cross-head winds."

Armstrong extended her overall classification lead to 40 second over Katheryn Mattis (Webcor-Builders), while Cheatley is a further 10 seconds adrift.

A 15-strong group split from the peloton over a steep ascent after Pinos Altos in the Gila National Forest. Armstrong initiated the move followed by Mattis and Alexis Rhodes (Webcor-Builders), Catherine Cheatley, Tiffany Cromwell and Andrea Dvorak (Colavita-Sutter Home), Leah Goldstein, Robin Farina and Chrissy Ruiter (Value Act Capital), Alison Powers (Team Type 1), Anne Samplonius and Hilary Billington (Lip Smackers).

Notably missing from the front group of climbers was Alisha Welsh (PCIM), who dropped back to fourth place on general classification after her impressive podium finish on her 26th birthday a day earlier. Colavita-Sutter Home and Value Act Capital both had riders inside the top 10, so took advantage of their strong position in the break and worked to hold a one minute margin.

"It was good for us because it would have moved me into third and we had our three best GC riders all up there," Cheatley said. "But, it worked out well for Webcor because in the end they got a stage win."

Tactics played a key role in the chase, as Value Act Capital- and Colavita-Sutter Home's remaining riders were not obliged to help. Webcor Builders was not content with the move and forced the chase from behind.

"It didn't do us any good to have that smaller group up the road with Kristin," said Webcor-Builder's directeur sportif Karen Brems. "We had Katheryn and Alexis sit on because we wanted to have more girls to work against Kristin. We also had our sprinter Gina back in the chase group."

The two groups came back together 67 kilometres into the women's 125 kilometre road race, but not before Nicole Evans (Value Act Capital) had time to escapee. She gained a healthy 2:30 minutes before the base of the final climb, making her the race's virtual leader at the time.

Evans fought against strong cross-head winds to get over the 16 kilometre open highway climb ahead of the others. A long 20 kilometre descent greeted her on the way into town, but her solo strength was no match for a combination effort from Webcor Builders, Colavita-Sutter Home and Armstrong.

Evans was caught with one kilometre to go, as the two powerful teams organised themselves for a sprint. Armstrong took the reins of the bike race in order to stay out of harms way and not penalised for any time gaps coming into the finish.

"My team-mates were kind of blown but they were all up there ready," Grain said. "I was on Kristin's wheel and she took it all the way inside the 500 metres to go. I jumped off her wheel at 200 metres."
