Heavy rain stopped the fourth stage

Stage four of the Vuelta a México was stopped a few kilometres into the race because of heavy rainfall, making the roads too dangerous for the riders. American Mark Hekman (Toshiba) had escaped the bunch at the first intermediate sprint, when the sky darkened and a storm came up. Race organisers and UCI commissaires then decided to stop the stage and shorten it.

Once the rain had ceased, five laps of the 4.4km course were raced, with Spaniard José Benites, (Scott American Beef) winning the sprint. The result did not count in the general classification.
