Italy's Daniel Bennati of Team Liquigas won the last appointment on the sprinters' calendar, the 94th Giro del Piemonte, ahead of Italian Luca Paolini (Acqua Sapone-Caffè Mokambo) and Belarusian Alexandre Usov (AG2R La Mondiale). The Italian classic ended appropriately in a sprint after 199 kilometres of racing from Nove Ligure to Lagnasco.

"It's [a result of] the combination of hard work and good condition," Bennati, 28, said to Cyclingnews of the victory. The rider from Arezzo, Toscana, won the race's last edition in 2006.

The race departed from Nove Ligure at 10:47. A two-man escape highlighted the early morning. Italian Sergio Laganà (LPR Brakes) and Belgian Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) went free at kilometre 30. The duo built its maximum advantage of 8'45" by kilometre 56.

Alessandro Petacchi's LPR Brakes team did the muscle work to keep the group under control. By kilometre 163, 36 kilometres to Lagnasco, the day's move was finished.

LPR Brakes ceased control of the group when Petacchi, recent winner of GP Beghelli, lost contact on the claim of Morra at 55 kilometres remaining. He trailed behind the race by seven minutes in the finale.

"We continued to pull, regardless of Petacchi being dropped," said Bennati.

There were a few escape attempts in the closing 15 kilometres, but Liquigas kept control. CSF Group and Acqua Sapone aided in the work. In the final kilometres, Paolini's team made its presence felt with Liquigas.

"I am sorry for the team; we worked hard in the last ten kilometres. Liquigas has a strong sprinter, but I am content with my second place," said Paolini. "Bennati was strong; he is a pure sprinter."

Usov made a preemptive strike before the final left-hand bend at 150 metres out.

"I tried with a long move from 500 metres out," he said. "The strongest rider won and Luca [Paolini] is a good rider, he has already won this race. Content? Yes, even if my legs were not perfect."

Usov will end his race on Saturday with RCS Sport's final race of the year, the Giro di Lombardia. The 242-kilometre Monument takes in the Madonna del Ghisallo, a 8.6km climb to the sanctuary dedicated to cyclists.

Bennati concluded his year with a win – a season that included seven total wins, with three stages and the points jersey in the Giro d'Italia.

"I will work immediately on my foot problem which was bothering me at the Giro d'Italia. Surgery? I don't know."
