6th Mount Hood Classic - NE/2.2WOregon, USA, May 13-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 17: Wy'East Road Race, 101/70 milesManion, Abbott win atop Mt. HoodBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor on Mt. Hood Sutherland set for second win in two weeksThe queen stage of the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic appropriately climbed Mt. Hood, up to the Meadows Ski Resort. Men's race leader Rory Sutherland (HealthNet-Maxxis) had two riders to worry about today - prologue winner Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) and Stage 2 winner Darren Lill (BMC), who were both within a minute of the lead. While a major break did gain up to five minutes, putting Bissell's Teddy King into the virtual yellow jersey, the HealthNet-Maxxis team buried itself to bring the gap down on the bottom of the climb. Then it was tempo riding to the top to reel in the rest of the break as Caleb Manion (Toyota-United) capitalized on an uncovered attack by James Mattis (California Giant Berry Farms) for the win. "It was a hard finish," Manion told Cyclingnews. "Mattis attacked and the boys started mucking around a bit letting him go, so I jumped across to him. We were just going as fast as we can, together until 200 metres, then put it in the biggest gear I've got and gave it a go." Mattis, a 35 year-old mechanical engineer and a virtual weekend warrior compared to Manion, was stoked about the second place result. "I bridged across to the break on the first KOM and then more people came up after that," he said. "The final move was about five kilometres to go - Successful Living, Bissell and Kelly Benefits each put a guy on the front and were just pulling it up the climb. They pulled off at five kilometres to go looking around, jockeying for position. So I took off because they were just watching me." "Caleb came across and I heard the yellow jersey group was coming and I was like, 'Aw crap!'," he added. "So I just went as hard as I could - second place in a race of this caliber is huge for the team and for me. I put a 45 hour week in at work last week!" Behind them the yellow jersey group was steadily swallowing up the main break of the day and shedding riders, finally down to a group of about 20 in the last five kilometres. Lill set a tough pace in the group to shed Jacques-Maynes, who was just one second ahead of him in second place on general classification. "I wasn't too worried about the break as long as they were inside a minute," said Lill. "Then I knew nobody could pass me on the GC. I wanted to get rid of Jacques-Maynes because he was just one second ahead of me. As soon as we got to the steep part I attacked and Rory came with [me] - the two of us rode away from what was left of the group with Jacques-Maynes. "Rory was just sitting on my wheel and I had to make sure Jacques-Maynes couldn't come back so I rode a hard tempo up the rest of the climb and picked up most of the break," he added. Sutherland enjoyed his ride today as his team-mates burned about every match to get him to the line, with last year's second place finisher Phil Zajicek escorting him in the final five kilometres. "I just wanted to look after him on the climb," said Zajicek, who knows the climb well from last year. "It isn't much of a steep climb. The gap got up there but we always knew it would come back." "Phil was great," added Sutherland. "It shows what I said yesterday, that you can have a bad day but it doesn't mean you are going bad. But the whole team absolutely killed themselves for me. It's something you don't get used to and I really admire the guys for that. "The break had up to five minutes but then we got some help from Symmetrics, which was great because our guys were absolutely killing themselves," continued the Australian. "King was 1:45 back and I knew we had to get it under three minutes at the bottom of climb. I figured Darren would try to get away on the climb and that would bring the gap down. "He did what he had to do to win the race," Sutherland said about Lill's tempo. "On paper I figured with this climb Jacques-Maynes would be behind me so Lill was the one I was most worried about. He tried it but I think he is happy with just moving up ahead of Ben. I wasn't worried about the stage victory, just the jersey. So I just had to stay on Lill's wheel." Sutherland was also complimentary about the racing by the Bissell team. "Ted King was [in the break] so it was dangerous," he noted. "Hats off to Bissell for actually racing the race. Our guys were in some trouble out there and it's better to see guys trying to race, and I give them a lot of credit for that." Without wanting to jinx himself in tomorrow's final criterium, Sutherland was cautiously optimistic about what looks to be his second stage race victory in two weeks, after winning Joe Martin last week. "We have a goal and just need to get to the finish - keep it upright and keep it safe," he said. "We lost Tim today and the guys are pretty tired, but we'll recuperate tonight and hopefully it will be two for two weeks." Beveridge keeps yellow with teamworkThe course for this year's Wy'East road race was shortened due to the change to UCI 2.2 status, but the increase in firepower in the field made it seem at least just as difficult. Jeanie Longo-Ciprelli (River City Bicycles) took out her anger with the commissaries and rode away from the field at the base of the final climb up Mt. Hood. But the Aaron's team kept its cool and escorted race leader Julie Beveridge to the top within reach. On their coattails was United States of America Road Champion Mara Abbot (High Road), who waited for the catch of Longo to pounce and claim a solo win. The combination of the race exploding apart on the climb and poor race communication meant that Abbott was not sure she had won - which is why she did not post-up at the line. "I wasn't positive I won," she told Cyclingnews. "They were saying there were four riders, then one rider a minute ahead of them and another a minute ahead of her. I passed the four and then I saw the lead car so I realized there was a possibility that I had it." "I am riding virtually alone so I can sit-in while other teams have more bullets to shoot," said Abbott. "And with Longo making the pace it made it harder for people to recover." Longo said her lack of knowledge on the day's stage made things difficult for her. Longo was handed a penalty yesterday that virtual cost her the stage win and general classification lead, after her bike was deemed out of regulation with a handlebar pitch angled down too far, even though she claimed it was the exact set-up she used for Tuesday's prologue. "When you don't know the course it is very hard to know when to attack and when to recover," Longo said about the new course. "I didn't know if it was up for a long time or not, and I don't have any team-mates. At the bottom of the climb I was one kilometre in the lead and I made a hard pace. "But Mara did the same thing as two days ago because they are all focusing
on me," she added. "They get exhausted and stop when they catch me and they
forget about her. I could have stayed with her if I had someone with me to share
the work." Longo was still upset with the controversial time trial yesterday, with the handlebar position compounded by a tarter mistake. The time lost easily cost her the stage win by a large gap and what would have been a likely overall win with her ride today. "The officials made a mistake about the start," she said. "They asked me to come with four riders to go, but I was supposed to start with three to go. And I don't understand about my handlebars, it was the exact same at the prologue." "I should have had the yellow jersey today and I should have it now," she added. Defending champion Leah Goldstein (ValuAct Capital) agreed that the course was easier but the riders in the field made it harder. "Last year was really hard because it was longer and I was by myself," she explained. "But [the riders] made it harder today - Aaron's, Mara Abbott, Jeanie Longo." Doing the bulk of the work on the front to chase down Longo was Meredith Miller (Aaron's) who was looking after her leader. "It wasn't a fast, super aggressive race - but we have the jersey so we set the tempo on the front," said Miller. "I didn't even know it was Longo until they passed us." Miller was able to warn Beveridge that Abbott was going on the attack in the final kilometres, which helped save the jersey. "When Mara went by and Julie wasn't with her I got on the radio and said, 'Come on Julie'," she said. "I couldn't go with Mara and it wasn't going to make a difference." While Abbott's attack did not net her the yellow jersey, she is still happy with her win. "I got closer...and I won the stage apparently," she said. "So a good days work."
