Stage 4 - May 18: Van Buren’s criterium

Huff wins crit; Chadwick dedicates victory to his family

By Kirsten Robbins in Van Buren, Arkansas

The Tour of Arkansas came to an end this afternoon with the down town Van Buren’s seventy-five minute criterium. Crowds gathered in the old western-style town to watch a show down which ended with Brad Huff (Jelly Belly) taking a slim victory ahead of Karl Menzies (HealthNet-Maxxis) and Mark Walters (Team RACE).

"It’s a great result for me because this is my second race back with the team," continued Huff who was benched during the early season due to multiple cycling related injuries. "Jelly Belly is very supportive and was behind me during my recovery."

"The good thing is the three of us are smart enough riders to know that we couldn’t play cat and mouse too much or we’d get caught," said Huff referring the equal amount of work down by each rider in their break.

Team Type 1 continued to set a leading example by riding a strong paced tempo for the duration of the event, solidifying Glen Chadwick’s overall race victory ahead of Predrag Prokic (Toshiba-Santo) and Michael Lang (Jelly Belly).

"This is my first stage race win in America," said Chadwick who won his last stage race in 2003 during the Tour of Korea and Beijing. "I’m really happy with this win because lately I’ve been riding in the top five a lot. My wife really helped me to focus on cycling after an emotional off-season. I have her and my daughter to thank for this."

Chadwick was forced to sit out much of the early season after being diagnosed with Epstein Barr shortly after a life threatening spinal virus infected his two year old daughter Jade, forcing he and his wife, Isabel to spend five weeks at their daughter’s hospital bedside.

"It’s been a strange season with a pretty bad six months off because my family and I were very sick," continued Chadwick. "To actually pull off a result like this is amazing for myself. It was very tough for us to see our daughter hooked up to an I.V. all the time and her veins were collapsing. It’s hard to explain to a two year old why the doctors were always sticking her with needles."

How it unfolded

An early break of five riders rode ahead of the Team Type 1 train during the first few laps. The break included Huff and team-mate Nick Reistad, Menzies and Walters along with Eric Brownell (CRCA-Empire).

"It was unplanned but very good to have two of us in the break and that helped out a lot in the end," said Huff who benefited from his team-mates constant surges that forced Walters and Menzies to chase. "It’s nice to be in the break with two other strong riders because it makes a big difference - We can’t complain when we pulled off a win and Nick did a lot of work."

When the five riders were close to lapping the field, Reistad opened a gap on his breakaway companions in an attempt to solo his way onto the back of the peloton. However, Team Type 1 lifted their speeds a notch with the dwindled peloton in tow, pulling away from Reistad who was left to regroup with Huff, Menzies and Walters.

In the final laps, both Reistad and Brownell were reabsorbed into the peloton and the three eventual podium riders played a tactical game with one lap to go. "We started the cat and mouse stuff with seven laps to go but we almost got caught so we agreed to work hard for a few more laps before we started sprinting, just to make sure that we stayed away," said Walters who attacked the pair through the chicane with half a lap to go but was caught and passed before the last corner.

"We had to keep an eye on who was trying to get up the road," said Chadwick regarding his team giving leeway to the five riders. "None of them were a threat to my lead. I’m not sure if they wanted to take a lap on us but we kept them in check. I think they started stuffing around a bit because we started to bring them back. We were really focused and setting a good tempo to make sure the GC guys didn’t make a silly decision on trying to attack."

Chadwick took hold of the early race lead after winning the first two stages, a feat that gave Team Type 1 the responsibility of control each mountainous stage and fighting strong winds at the front.

"The guys really wanted to do it and the team had confidence in both me and Moises Aldape and we were able to prove to them that we could do win," said Chadwick. "Some of our riders are new and they’ve never been in the situation of protecting a leader’s jersey before so it was a good experience for them and they were very strong."
