Ventoso adds to Castilla tally

Sprinter Francisco Ventoso has given his Andalucía - Cajasur team its biggest win of the season in the tough uphill finish of stage three of the Vuelta a Castilla y León. The Spaniard, who won three stages in last year's edition, put in a huge burst of speed on the punishing finale in Urueña to win by a large margin ahead of Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Karpin-Galicia's Gustavo Lemos. Overall leader Alberto Contador enjoyed a quiet day in the peloton on the flat stage and maintained his position with ease.
On a mainly flat stage just shy of 160 kilometres long ,a break of three, Jose Lopez (As a cold rain began to fall on the peloton, three riders; David Martin Velasco (Orbea - Oreka S.D.A), José Antonio Lopez Gil (Andalucía - Cajasur) and Oleg Chuzhda (Contentpolis - Murcia) were able to garner some quality television time by escaping the field from the second kilometre. The trio gained a maximum of nearly four minutes, which was reduced to just over two minutes as they entered the 25 kilometre circuit in Urueña and the chase began in earnest.

The Astana team took a back seat in the chase, which was led predominantly by the Rabobank team of third place overall Thomas Dekker, the Euskaltel-Euskadi team of fifth placed Samuel Sanchez and the sprint-hungry Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni squad of combination classification leader Daniele Nardello. On the sometimes quite technical circuit, the leading trio worked well together, but the fight through the strong crosswind proved to be too much, and the breakaway was caught in the final ten kilometres.
An immediate counter-attack by Contenpolis-Murcia's Julian Sanchez and and Eduard Vorganov (Karpin Galicia) succeeded in gaining 15 seconds on the peloton before Astana decided to throw some weight into controlling the peloton and reeled the pair in. The peloton hit the final kilometre all together with the Karpin Galicia team setting the pace across the windswept plains. The sprint was nearly foiled by an attack by Saunier Duval's Alberto Fernández de la Puebla, but he faded in the final 200 metres and was overtaken by the charge led by his former team-mate Ventoso.
Team CSC suffered, losing three of its riders in one day. Sprinter Juan Jose Haedo had pain in his wrist after crashing during training on Friday, while Jason McCartney, who was sitting in fourth overall, abandoned with stomach problems and Inigo Cuesta crashed and had to abandon halfway through the stage.
With no classified climbs on the stage, Orbea's Ivan Melero maintained the mountains jersey, while Contador continued to lead the points classification in addition to the overall. Slipstream held its position as best team. Tomorrow's finish atop the category one Collada de Salcedillo should begin to shake up the general classification, which separates the top ten by only 36 seconds after three stages of racing.
