Winstead from almost man to stage winner

Matt Winstead (Inferno Racing) has been the "almost man" of the 2008 Tour of Ohio thus far, scoring second place in the prologue time trial at Mt. Vernon as well as in the tough Hocking Hills road race. Winstead is no longer knocking on the door of a stage win, however – he kicked that door in by taking the dramatic sprint uphill to finish in Gambier with the overall leader's jersey, taking it off the shoulders of Dan Campbell (RGF).
The third day of the Tour of Ohio began in the hilltop village of Gambier near the stately campus of Kenyon College. The 116-kilometre course wound its way through the bucolic eastern Ohio countryside to Coshocton only to turn around and return back to Gambier. The course featured almost as many rollers as cows on the side of the road in addition to four KoM climbs.
The race quickly moved out of Gambier and rode the wings of a strong tailwind. The group was largely compact on the road to Coshocton, save for a few speculative moves that were reeled back as quickly as they got off.
At the first KoM up Tunnel Hill a large group eventually separated themselves from the main field. The group included Justin Lindine (Targettraining), Toby Walsh (Kenda), John Meyers (ABD/Geargrinder), and John Minturn (Empire/CRCA). Meyers took the hotspot sprint at midway and the group managed to stay together until after the second time up Tunnel Hill upon the race's return leg.
Another group containing race leader Dan Campbell (RGF), Dewey Dickey (Mercy/Specialized), Eric Murphy (myogenesis.com), Sebastian Sinisterra (myogenesis.com), Nick Friesen (GS Mengoni), Josh England (Inferno Racing), Joe Cooper (Inferno Racing), Jered Gruber (Time/cyclesafe.org), and David Duncan (Time/cyclesafe.org) got free after the Meyers group was absorbed. But the presence of so many men who were high on GC and potential race winners doomed this escape from the outset as there was a concerted effort on the part of many teams to bring them back.

Once the final escapees were caught on the flat highway run-in to Gambier, it became obvious that field sprint on the final 1km climb was going to decide the winner of the race. This was a somewhat unpredictable occurrence from the outset of the race, given the undulating nature of the course.
At 200 metres Winstead launched his move and timed it just right as he beat Alejandro Padilla (Nashvillecyclist.com/ PB Pedaler) at the line with Ryan Knapp (Alderfer Bergen) right behind. Minturn, who was originally fourth, got an unexpected gift from the referee when Padilla was relegated for an expletive he shouted on the line after he was beaten in the sprint. The controversial decision caused much consternation among the Nashvillecyclist.com team as they felt the decision was unduly harsh.
It was Winstead and his Inferno team that owned the day though. With the time bonus for winning, Winstead is now ensconced over his rival Campbell in first place by the thinnest of margins, 18 seconds. Campbell gets the KoM jersey as his consolation prize. Meyers, by virtue of nabbing the midrace hotspot sprint goes over the top of Marco Aledia (Inferno) for the sprinters jersey.
Day four of the Tour of Ohio features a return to the streets with a criterium that runs through the peaceful tree lined streets of suburban Worthington. Aledia, who grew up and went to school in Worthington is surely keen to get the sprinters jersey back on the streets where he rode his first Huffy, if not the stage win.
