Duncan in a dramatic sprint

David Duncan (Time/cyclesafe.org) won a dramatic sprint to take the opening stage of the 2008 Tour of Ohio. Duncan managed to blow past his three breakaway companions, Matt Winstead (Inferno Racing), Luke Servedio (Team Krystal - SCV), and Justin Lindine (Targettraining) in the final sprint after 60 laps of a twisting, white-knuckled criterium.
The 2008 Tour of Ohio opened with a prologue criterium on the streets of Mt Vernon. A tight and twisting circuit, which featured eight turns in it’s seven kilometer length, greeted the 122 riders who lined up in the hope of taking the first yellow jersey of the event.
It appeared, in the early stages, as though the race was destined for a field sprint. Inferno Racing, numerically the largest team in the race, seemed intent from the outset to keep things together. But the rouleurs were determined to have their way and eventually, they did when Lindine counterattacked after a flurry of escape efforts and finally freed himself.
Lindine was alone for several laps before Duncan attacked the bunch and quickly bridged across with Winstead. Five laps later, Servedio was the last to pass muster and the four riders rode smartly to consolidate their advantage over the rest of the charging pack.
Servedio was the first to draw blood when he pipped Lindine for a prime with five laps to go. Though no other of the four ventured to attack at the end. The peloton behind were controlled but still enough on the heels of the four leaders to prevent any gamesmanship by the front four in the remaining five laps ensuring that they would sprint as a group in the finale.
Duncan launched his sprint from the final corner and powered up the final drag to leave no doubt as to his victory as he showed his breakaway rivals a clean set of wheels. Winstead, who rode strongly in the break, didn't have the gas and came up second with Servedio following having pocketed a nice roll of cash already from his prime.
While Duncan will start Stage 2 in yellow, Inferno did get a consolation prize when Marco Aledia captured the sprinters jersey in his bid to repeat as King of the Sprinters.
