Mexico's Moises Aldape (Team Type 1) took his first victory on American soil in a tactical sprint finish at the top Mt Bachelor Ski Resorts. Aldape took the Stage 5 victory ahead of mid-race break away companions Chad Beyer (USA) and Bradley White (Successful Living).

"This was my first win here and a very important one because of that," said Aldape. "The finish was very tactical between the other riders in the break so all I had to do was remain very patient."

United States Champion Levi Leipheimer (Astana) continued to increase his overall lead, which now stands at 2'30" over Jeff Louder (BMC). Louder's team-mate Darren Lill moved into third place after finishing only three seconds behind Leipheimer on the day's climb.

A significant 12-rider breakaway forced Leipheimer's team-mate Chris Horner to face the wind for over half the race. Horner's effort held the front group at a non-threatening 2'30", before Leipheimer shaved another 90 seconds off the gap on the final ascent.

"We needed to have help somewhere and luckily I've got some good friends," admitted Horner, who recruited some valuable help from the California Giant-Specialized team. "I've been in the business a long time, I've been on a lot of different teams and got a lot of friends to help out. Levi's got a good size gap so we don't need to win the stages, just the overall."

The professional men's field started the 134-kilometre trek at the Cascade Middle School, the base of a decisive 16-kilometre KOM ascent. A five-rider break got away including Aldape, Steve Bovay (BMC), Burke Swindlehurst (Bissell) and for a short time Santiago Botero (Rock Racing) and Scott Nydam (BMC). Aldape picked up full points on the KOM and at the finish line to move into KOM leader's jersey.

A 90 km/h descent followed the initial KOM and the peloton's momentum proved to be fast enough to reabsorb the three riders at the bottom. A flurry of attacks continued to keep the speeds fast until a 11 rider break set off 40-kilometres into the race.

Riders in the break included Aldape, Beyer, White Dominique Rollin and Caleb Manion (Toyota-United), Ian Mckissick and Brent Bookwalter (BMC), Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis), Blake Caldwell (Garmin-Chipotle), Brian Jensen (Successful Living), Jeremy Vennell (Bissell) and James Mattis (California Giant-Specialized). The breakaway presented no riders who were a threat to Leipheimer's overall lead.

"We didn't have radio contact and so we didn't know who the favourites were up there," said Horner. "But as long as Levi looked after the guys that were close to him on GC, then we could afford for about a three-minute gap to the other guys."

As the front group approached its maximum advantage of 2'30", it swelled to 12 riders when Chad Beyer successfully bridged across. As the group approached the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Rollin, Manion and Jensen fell out of the group reducing the break to nine riders.

"I tried to play it smart today, especially because there was a strong head wind up the last climb," said Beyer, who attacked at the climb's base. BMC's Ian Mckissick worked hard to bring Beyer back.

BMC duo Bookwalter and Mckissick set a fast tempo in the break up the final climb to contain riders like Beyer from gaining any more precious time. However, Bookwalter's main concern was general classification Caldwell. Caldwell used his climbing talent and attacked with five kilometres to go, forcing Bookwalter to continue to chase.

"Our goal was to stay as far out ahead of the main pack as we could with out letting Caldwell gain any time on me as well," said Bookwalter, who explained his responsibility bring back the Garmin-Chipotle rider. "Ian had done an amazing job on the second to last pitch keeping the pace really fast. Caldwell attacked and I had to time trial on the front to get back up to him because every second counts."

Caldwell's advantage over the chase group quickly diminished upon entering the Mt Bachelor Ski Resort. The last 500-metres presented a coned off flat section, through the parking lot.

"Fortunately I pulled Caldwell back close enough by the parking lot that the field jumped around me and caught him with 200-meters to go," said Bookwalter. "And they took the time bonuses too."

White jumped ahead of Bookwalter and gained a several second advantage, but both Aldape and Beyer timed their sprints to perfection, coming around the duo at the line.

"I just waited until the flat section at the top for the break away to regroup and then I started my sprint," said Aldape.

As the peloton approached the base of the climb, Horner and his California Berry-Specialized allies set tempo to reducing the breakaway's advantage over Leipheimer. Leipheimer took over with a quick pace with runner up general classification riders Chris Baldwin and Jeff Louder followed close behind. Approximately 10 riders followed Leipheimer, surpassing Tom Zirbel (Bissell) who fell off the difficult pace.

Leipheimer continued to increase his tempo to a speed that only Lill could follow, an effort that moved him into third place overall. The pair caught several of the break away riders and gained nearly 30" on the next group of general classification riders.

Armstrong makes it four

Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) accumulated her fourth victory this week atop Mt Bachelor. Armstrong climbed to the finish line ahead of Julie Beveridge and her Aaron's team-mate Felicia Gomez, who won a small group sprint for third.

"Coming up the climb it was only the five of us," said Armstrong. "I made a really hard attack and no one came with me."

Armstrong's effort over the 16 kilometre climb increased her general classification lead to 2'55" over Christine Thorburn (Webcor). Julie Beveridge (Aaron's) holds the best young rider's jersey in third place, 3'24" behind Armstrong. With just a circuit race remaining, it's unlikely the top placings will see any change on tomorrow's final stage.

"Some times I think that the girls in the field try to watch too many people," said Armstrong. "The only girls to pay attention to today would have been myself and Julie Beveridge. I think Aaron's did a great job today protecting Julie and not worrying about other riders who were going up the road - that was key in her performance today."

Armstrong picked up full KOM points at the finish line to regain the overall climbers competition lead.

Beveridge crossed the finish line 30 seconds behind Armstrong. Thorburn and her team-mate Katheryn Curi-Mattis worked together to reduce Beveridge's advantage down to 15 seconds, preserving Thorburn's second place overall.

"I think I've been able to learn a lot from Kristin this week," said Beveridge, who is in her second year of competitive cycling. "When I think about the race after it's done, I can see where she attacks me, where she sits in the peloton and I can learn from that and figure out what I should be doing."

"My team-mates have helped me a lot this week too," continued Beveridge. "Everyone has tried to ride as close to Kristin as we can but in the end we have to climb our own pace."

The professional women's field rolled out of the Wanoga Snow Park start line at the base of a five kilometre climb to kick off the toughest stage in the Cascade Cycling Classic, a 113-kilometre road race. Tibco initiated several attacks, resulting in separations that would last only a few kilometres before being reabsorbed into the field.

"We really wanted to make the race aggressive and get a break up the road," said Tibco's Helen Kelly. "For some reason none of the break seemed to stick but there were a lot of little moves today."

Race leader Armstrong admitted that she was happy to let a break away go if it was the right mix of riders. "Tibco was the most active as far as attacking goes," said Armstrong. "Breaks did try to form but then a team would try to send a second rider across.

"There is only one of me and so I can't have 20 riders go up the road," she added.

Some 48 kilometres to the finish line, Rushlee Buchanan (Tibco) rode off the front hoping that a few more riders would follow. The Australian ended up riding alone and approached the base of the finale climb with a two minute lead.

"I would have liked to have seen Rushlee win," admitted Armstrong, who caught the soloist three kilometres from the top. "I told her to get on my wheel but there was just one more pitch up and she didn't make it."

A core group of climbers including Aaron's Beveridge and Gomez and Webcor's Thorburn and Katheryn Curi-Mattis followed Armstrong over the climb until the leader's pace increased toward the top.

"I wasn't having a good day, even at the start of the climbing," said Thorburn, who finished fourth on the stage. "I tried to follow Julie for as long as possible. When I fell off her both Katheryn and Felicia caught up to me.

"Felicia was sitting on in the end but Katheryn and I were more concerned with maintaining second place so we had to put in the work at the end," added Thorburn, who also tried to preserve the Webcor's overall team classification lead. "We wanted to try to put the hurt on Kristin but we couldn't sacrifice ourselves totally, she already has so much time on other riders that she only had to follow me and Julie."

Once Beveridge separated herself from the other climbers, Webcor set a tempo on the front to try to bring her back before the line.

"I had to keep riding hard at the top because I could see Beveridge behind me and I knew the other three weren't to far back," said Armstrong.
