Botero takes the early lead atop Pilot Butte

By Kirsten Robbins Bend, Oregon

Colombia's Santiago Botero (Rock Racing) started the final climb up Pilot Butte 30 seconds ahead of the main field, and out rode Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) and Jeff Louder (BMC) to take victory at the two kilometre climb's summit. Botero made the right decision earlier when he bridged across to the mid-race break of 12 riders.

"I was the first to the corner at the base of the mountain," said Botero. "I accelerated and broke the group a little bit and finally I won."

Botero's victory placed him in the early lead of the Cascade Classic. He holds a 10 second advantage over Baldwin and 26 seconds ahead of Louder.

"The break was formed before the KOM and the difference was 40 seconds," said Botero. "I saw my team was not in that front group and I didn't want us to lose the race on the first stage."

"I knew Levi would be climbing well behind me," said Botero. "For me he is the best rider in the United States. It makes me sad because I am 100% sure that he could win the Tour and now he is here. Actually the field is very strong."

Baldwin and Louder followed Botero separated by each as the front of the main field came up the climb, passing some of the break away riders before the finish.

"I wanted to make sure the finish was close enough that it gave Chris a chance to pick up time on dangerous guys but keep out other guys in a position to be a threat," said Toyota-United director Len Pettyjohn, who offered a rider to help Garmin-Chipotle and HealthNet-Maxxis bring down the time gap.

Levi Leipheimer (Astana) was notably absent from the winning break. The 2007 Tour de France podium finisher regained most of the lost time, catching all but four riders on the climb to the finish.

"I made a mistake on the climb," said Leipheimer, who was undecided as to weather follow Botero across to the break. "Botero went and Chris Horner and I were following other teams. Slipstream [Garmin-Chipotle] was setting pace and I think I should have gone with Botero and took a risk."

Leipheimer, disappointed to be missing from the coinciding Tour de France, noted the strength of the field since he last raced the Cascade Classic a decade earlier.

"I have to say the race was pretty fast and it definitely brings back some good memories," he said. "There are 150 guys and it was so much faster. There are a lot of good teams here it's very impressive to see it come a long way in ten years."

How it unfolded

Showcasing the classic scenery of Eastern Oregon, riders started the 132-kilometre road race at the Deschutes County. The race would head over a field-shattering, four-kilometre KOM before heading back toward the finishing climb into Pilot Butte State Park.

Temperatures rose to over 90 degrees as the riders continued en route through the open high desert roads. Steven Cozza (Garmin-Chipotle) and Curtis Gunn (Successful Living) were the first to separate themselves from field in the early kilometres.

The pair were reabsorbed by the field 27 kilometres later as riders started attacking the peloton. A break of 12 riders emerged before the mid-race KOM that would eventually succeed to the end.

The riders included Ben Jacques-Maynes, Burke Swindlehurst and Jeremy Vennell (Bissell), Jonathan Garcia and Brent Bookwalter (BMC), Glen Chadwick and Chris Jones (Team Type 1), John Hunt (California Giant-Specialized) and Chad Beyer (USA-VMG).

Beyer took full points at the top of the four-kilometre climb, to lead of the polka dot climber's competition. "I need a team for next year so I want to do everything I can in this race," said Beyer.

The 12 riders kept the pace fast enough to gain a maximum of two and half minutes on the field. The peloton was predominately controlled by Garmin-Chipotle in the early chase.

A violent crash involving Ben Brooks (Team Type 1) left the rider unconscious after he became tangled up in a cattle guard while descending at top speeds. Brooks was air lifted to the hospital where is condition remains serious but stable.

Upon the rolling section of road heading into Bend, the gap to the break continued to decrease to 30 seconds. Riders from HealthNet-Maxxis, Toyota-United and Astana's Chris Horner then joined the chase.

"That break was pretty strong," said Leipheimer. "Chris and I are here having fun, there are only two of us so obviously it is going to be hard to win but we want to try. We are definitely going to have to take it day by day.

Armstrong victorious despite mechanical

Not even set of broken spokes held the former world champion Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) back from a slim victory. The American strongwoman stood victorious atop Pilot Butte after stage one, where she claimed a slim victory over Julie Beverage (Aaron's) and Christine Thorburn (Webcor).

"Spectators were yelling at me on the climb to 'get in the right gear'," said Armstrong of the clinking and clanking of her bike as she rode up to the finish.

Armstrong's win gave her full points toward the polka dot climber's jersey. She also leads the general classification by seven seconds over Beverage and 23 seconds ahead of Thornburn.

"I set a strong tempo up the climb to try to separate the field," said Armstrong. "It is very interesting racing out here because there are so many individuals people aren't willing to get up front and chase because they have no team-mates."

"The higher the percentage of the peloton that are individuals, the less the peloton will chase making it easier to gain time on the field," she added.

Tactics came into full swing with 10 kilometres remaining as Webcor used its numbers and sent a flurry of attacks to try and tire the eventual winner before the climb. Beverage, who recently won the Mt Hood stage race, noted Armstrong's effort to chase the three highly animated Webcor riders.

"Kristin was following all of the attacks and I sat on her wheel," said Beverage. "As we came into the climb she jumped and I again sat on her wheel and tried to stay with her for as long as possible."

How it unfolded

The 90 rider women's field left the Deschutes Fair Grounds on an 132-kilometre loop around the scenic Eastern Oregon terrain. The stage then circled back toward the Pilot Butte State Park, a volcanic landmark once used as an India look out in 1813 to observe the explorers moving along the Deschutes River.

Sarah Barber (Bobs-Bicycles.com) took the initiative to leap off the front of the field, 40 kilometres into the start of the race. Barber gained a healthy lead over the peloton, which was content to wait until the climb before starting the day's work.

"I felt like it wasn't too windy and nothing was happening so I wanted to take a risk," she said.

Barber's risk turned out to be the start of a break that would succeed to the end, 90 kilometres later. "I'm new to the sport and usually I sit in and conserve," she said. "Today I wanted to go for it and see what would happen."

Armstrong set a tempo that ultimately led to the winning seven-rider break at the base of the four kilometre KOM. Riders were neutralized at the top of the KOM due to an accident in the men's field.

The seven riders included Armstrong, Beverage, Thorburn and Barber along with Katheryn Curi-Mattis and Janel Holcomb (Webcor) and Felica Gomez (Aaron's).

"What happened in the men's race was horrible," said third placed Thornburn. "But stopping us is what needed to be done."

The race officials stopped the women's field for approximately 30 minutes before resuming the race. The seven riders were sent off with the advantage they had when the race was stopped, followed by a two rider chase group and then the field.

Ambar Rais (Tibco) and Meredith Millar worked together but were reabsorbed by the field rendering Tibco and Touchstone climbing on the front chasing for the final 50 kilometres.
