South Africans shine on day three

South African golden boy Robbie Hunter (Team Barloworld) took the winner's jersey in day three of the Intakatech World 's Views Challenge international cycling race. German Björn Schröder (Team Milram) and South Africa's Christoff van Heerden (Konica Minolta) finished second and third. South Africans also took fourth, fifth and sixth positions with Jaco Venter (Neotel), Juan van Heerden (MTN Energade) and Jay Thomson (MTN Energade) taking the fourth through sixth places respectively.
Hunter took the sprint finish in a fast race with a nail-biting finish during which four riders – Ciaran Power (Pezula) Herman Fouche (Konica Minolta), Daryl Impey (Team Barloworld) and Artur Gajek (Team Milram) – crashed dramatically 100m before the end of the race. His team-mate Kenyan rider Christopher Froome also won the King of the Mountain competition for the day.
"Barloworld can be extremely happy with their team working particularly hard today" said event director Alec Lenferna.
Van Heerden has spent ample time on the podium today and yesterday after winning both stages of the King of the Mountain for day two yesterday. Today he took third place and also won the Subaru sprint jersey.
The Intaka Tech development team and team Rwanda were also publicly praised from the podium today when Lenferna acknowledged the excellent performance both teams put into day three of the race.
Today's honours meant three podium positions in three races for Team Milram. Bjorne Schroder carried the flag with his second place today. Milram are fielding a mostly youthful team in this event with two senior riders who have previously ridden in the Tour de France - the rest of the team are using the Intaka Tech World's View Challenge to gain valuable international experience.
Hunter and his team enjoyed his first win of the fledgling season today with his sterling ride. "We came through fighting today but worked hard from the start," Hunter said. "The next two days will be hard - I am not looking forward to it. I am however looking forward to the rest day tomorrow."
The day, which was cooler than yesterday with only occasional drizzle, saw some fast riding through the lush countryside around Wartburg, New Hanover and Dalton in a race which started and ended in Alexandra Park. "It was perfect racing conditions today," said Lenferna.
The Intaka Tech Worlds View Challenge teams will be competing both for points on the UCI African leader board and for prize money to the value of R650 000. Tuesday is a rest day. Final competitions in the first-ever men's elite UCI category 1.1 race in Africa will wrap up Wednesday and Thursday.
