Eisel takes easy win
Devolder ties up Algarve title

Austrian sprinter Bernhard Eisel (Team High Road) eased across the Volta ao Algarve's Stage 5 finish line in Portimăo some three seconds ahead of his nearest rivals. Eisel attacked his break away group in the final kilometres and proved strong enough to claim a solo victory, his fourth stage win at the Portuguese race.
Eisel's breakaway group attacked early on the 193.5 kilometre final stage, and without any general classification threatening riders in the small group were allowed to stay away for the stage's duration. The break was one of three main groups that characterized the final stage.
"After 30 km I was able to get away with a Barloworld rider," explained Eisel on his website eisel.com. "Then seven riders came up from behind and joined us, and the field was never able to catch us. Quick Step pushed the peloton, but we were able to hold a slight lead to the end."
Eisel said of his four wins at Algarve today's was the best, after the sprinter broke away from the lead group with just one kilometre to go and held out for victory.
Despite a trying day on the bike Belgian Stijn Devolder (Quick Step) finished in the main bunch of riders, enough to claim the general classification victory. Devolder's group finished 20 seconds behind Eisel, while the remaining riders continued to cross the finish line over the next 17 minutes.

"Everything went well," said Devolder. "The team has been strong and all the guys gave their best. It's really a team victory."
Devolder's Belgian ProTour team wasn't only united in victory on the final stage, it was also united in crashing. Four Quick Step riders - Mauro Facci, Wilfried Cretskens, Devolder and Davide Viganň - were caught in a tangle that saw Viganň taken to hospital for a checkup. The Italian was cleared of any fractures and is due to return home this evening.
Devolder's Algarve victory was the 13th of the Belgian's career and came in his first race with Quick Step after former team Discovery Channel closed its doors at the end of 2007. The event is the third stage race victory of his career, having won Drie Daagse Van de Panne in 2005 and last year's Tour of Austria.
"This victory allows me to face with serenity the next important appointments," said Devolder. "This race has been a good test to understand at what point is my condition."
Devolder took the race lead on yesterday's Individual Time Trial, where the Belgian's commanding stage victory catapulted him into the overall lead. The wet Time Trial played a crucial role in the event's general classification, with the previous stages being dominated by bunch-sprint finishes.
