New Zealand Criterium Championships - CNChristchurch, New Zealand, December 7, 2008Gough & Sheridan take overall honours at criterium championshipsBeijing Olympic medallist Wesley Gough continued his fine form to win the overall honours at the New Zealand Criterium Championships in Christchurch. Gough followed on from his win in the criterium in Taupo last week, holding off his Beijing pursuit team-mate Marc Ryan in the final sprint. He claimed the U23 national honours while Ryan took the elite title and third-placed Tim Scully was awarded the U19 title. A record field of more than 50 riders took part in the men's race, held in front of a large number of enthusiastic spectators around the central city in Christchurch. The field included the Beijing Olympic team pursuit medallists among an exceptionally strong field. The men raced for 45 minutes plus two laps and the women for 35 minutes plus two laps. The pace was strong in the men's race with riders dropping off after the second lap. Gough and Ryan broke clear midway through but were caught. They again pushed clear and had a 50 metre lead at the bell lap from the chase pack that included double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston, world track champion Haydn Godfrey, Brendan Sharratt and Scully. Gough managed to ride over his Olympic teammate to claim the overall honours and the U23 title, with Ryan getting the national elite titlewhile Scully took out the pack sprint to grab an impressive third place overall. Serena Sheridan continued her outstanding season, winning the women's championship after a brilliant solo break to finish clear of visiting Australian Ruth Corsett and Saturday's road race winner Catherine Cheatley. She made a big move mid-race to ride clear of the field, racing solo to win comfortably from Corsett and Cheatley. Emma Peterson won the women's U19 championship while impressive teenager John Atkins won the U17 men's honours.
