Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United) timed his win to perfection when he jumped ahead of his breakaway in pursuit of solo rider Alessandro Bazzana (Successful Living). The French-Canadian snuck passed the Italian in the final 400-metres to take the victory in the fourth annual Rochester criterium.

Successful Living landed two podium places when Charles Dionne won the break sprint for third.

"I knew I could catch Bazzana," said Rollin, who bridged across to the soloist in the final metres to the line. "But I didn't want to catch him right away just in case he sat on me and had time to recover for the sprint. I gauged my effort and tried to surprise him at the end – I had enough left over to sprint passed him."

Rollin moved into the Omnium lead with 60 points, ahead of second placed Ryan Roth (Team Race Pro) who has 35 points. Luis Amaran (Colavita/Sutter Home) moved into third place with 29 points.

"It's a great day for Toyota-United," said Rollin regarding the team's stage victory and overall lead. "All the guys worked really hard to take over this jersey. With three guys well placed on GC, our jobs were to cover moves tonight. As soon as my break got away, our guys protected my lead and made sure we stayed away."

A winning break of eight riders escaped the field in the early laps of the criterium and gained a maximum of thirty seconds. The riders included Dionne and Mark Walters (Team Race Pro) along with Rollin, Bazzana, Tony Cruz and Martin Kohler (BMC), Luis Amaran (Colavita-Sutter Home) and Shawn Milne (Team Type 1).

Bazzana seized an opportunity to win the race when the break lulled with one lap to go. He gained an instant advantage on the group as he flew through the final corners toward what he thought was a win. Rollin sensed the threatening move and went after him.

"I really wanted to win today," said Bazzana who dedicated his podium to his grandmother, who recently passed away. "I wanted to sprint tonight, but when I saw the group slowed I decided to jump early – I really thought I had it."

Rollin controlled his effort to catch Bazzana on the last lap and surprise him on the last straightaway. "I knew I could get away from the others or win a sprint," said Rollin. "I accelerated and tried to bridge to Bazzana. I paced my self well and started my sprint with 400–metres to go."

Yellow jersey Roth took his turn on the front of the main field for several laps trying to close down the breakaway. He needed the valuable points available on the line to maintain his lead. Teams Toyota-United and BMC waited patiently behind the pace setters, ready to go if the break returned. Teams such as Kelly Benefit-Strategies Medifast and Empire missed the break and tried to make up for it by driving the pace of the peloton.

Notable riders like Matt Johnson (Empire), Keven LaCombe and David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) spent countless laps in the wind trying to bring back the breakaway.

There efforts did not reduce the time to the front group but they succeeded holding them at twenty-seconds.

How it unfolded

More than 100 riders lined up at sundown for the Rochester Twilight Criterium. The 120-minute race took place under light showers and on slick roads.

Each lap the peloton covered a distance of 1.6-kilometres on undulating terrain through nine corners. Despite the rain, some 40,000 fans lined the circuit to catch a glimpse of the celebrated annual event.

"I really like the rain," said Rollin, who proved his rainy day success after his stage four victory in the Tour of California under atrocious weather conditions. "Most riders get depressed over it, but I think I do better in the rain."

BMC set the stage launching several early attacks that resulted in a breakaway of four riders from BMC, Toyota-United, Team Type 1 and Successful Living. They held a slim lead off the front, but riders vying to bridge across quickly shut down the escapees' advantage.

Dionne and Walters initiated the winning move just ten laps into the criterium. The pair worked together to gain a twenty-second advantage while several unsuccessful groups attempted to join them. The break swelled from two to eight when six strong men joined the leaders mid-race. Riders included the race winner Rollin, Bazzana along with Cruz, Amaran, Milne and Kohler.

The leaders worked well together with the exception of Walters, obliged to sit back given his team-mate and race leader Ryan Roth was back in the main field.

Known for his quickness, Dionne accumulated points in the two intermediate sprints to take the lead in the points competition. He will wear the green jersey in tomorrow's final stage where three more point sprints are available.

"Well, the goal was to win tonight," said the slightly disappointed sprinter. "But having two riders on the podium and the green jersey is still okay. We'll see how tomorrow goes – we'd like to keep the jersey."

Six-year veteran of the US Postal/Discovery Channel Team, Tony Cruz delighted the crowds as he drove the break's pace lap after lap. However, for every effort on the front of the break was an equal effort on the front of the peloton chasing behind.
