Fothen wins battle, Schröder the war

In a dramatic finale Markus Fothen of Gerolsteiner took out the stage win with a late attack, but came up short in his quest to overall victory. General classification leader Björn Schröder had to dig deep to reach the finish line two seconds behind in third place. That gave him a four-second bonus – the same margin with which he won the overall classification. Luca Paolini (Acqua e Sapone) managed another second place, after having been relegated to that position in stage 3.
Fothen trailed by 12 seconds going into the stage. His late surged secured him the day's win along with a 10-second time bonus. The move almost worked, as Schröder was dropped. But the Milram rider fought hard to squeeze into third place, receiving the final time bonus of four seconds.
Fothen was upbeat after the stage, despite coming up short of taking out the general classification. "I tried on the Texaspass [the main climb], but I couldn't get away. So my last chance was a little rise two kilometres from the line. It was enough to get a small gap, but nothing more. One rider was better than me, I have to accept that."
For Milram it was the second stage race victory of the season, after Christian Knees' victory in the Bayern Rundfahrt. "That was an unbelievable fight up to the last metre today," said Milram's Directeur Sportif, Jochen Hahn. "The guys went totally to their limit, sometimes even over it. A big compliment on Björn, who thanks to his strong performance rewarded us with this enormous success." Schröder himself was impressed. "The team worked really hard. We have a really good group of guys."
Andrei Kunitski (Acqua & Sapone) ended the stage race in fourth place overall, but it didn't come easy. "Today was tough. The first few laps went well, but the last two times I was really tired on the climb. At Burgos [where he finished eighth after leading the race from the first stage to the next to last - ed.] and here at the Regio Tour I raced well. It was important to stay with the front group. In the end I was just helping Luca Paolini." Paolini finished second for the second time, this time with a clean sprint and no controversy. Kunitski will do some smaller races in Italy before concentrating on the time trial in the World Championships.

Vázquez was content with his third place overall. "I had a good week, even though it was difficult to defend the jersey [Vázquez had led the first three days - ed.] I am not a time trial specialist, but I was racing it all out. Today I tried but I couldn't get away on the climbs. I even lost second place, but overall my summary for the race is good." His season will end with a few races in the Netherlands and Belgium. "It is a pity we didn't get invited to the Vuelta a España," he mused.

The sun was finally back in southern Germany. The race started out with three local laps of six kilometres each in Teningen. It became very apparent from the beginning that there wasn't going to be an easy champagne ride for Schröder. Several groups tried to get away in the opening circuit and Milram immediately had its full squad at the front.
Things didn't calm down much on the closing seven circuits of 16 kilometres, with the Texaspass being the main difficulty of the day. 13 riders were within 45 seconds of overall victory and attacks came after attacks. But no move could get away. Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet - Tönissteiner) did a desperate attempt in the next to last lap. He was 1'07 down and managed to slip into the virtual lead by one second. But that was as good as it got for him.
The final time across the top of the Texaspass the front group with all the favourites was together. Attacks were reeled in by Milram, sometimes even by Schröder himself. Everything was set for a showdown in Vogtsburg, with Fothen and Schröder providing the spectators of a battle royale all the way to the line.
