Roulston dominates Oceania cycling road race

By Bryan Simmonds in Gore

Ashburton's Hayden Roulston was at his belligerent best to take out the road title at the Lion Foundation Oceania cycling championships in Gore today. The New Zealander, who made his international comeback at last month's world championship, went clear with three laps remaining, riding the final 50 kilometres solo to grab a stunning victory.

Australia's Rochelle Gilmore prevented a New Zealand double when she got up over leading New Zealander Joanne Kiesanowski to take out the women's race.

How it unfolded

Roulston, who "retired" from the sport on medical grounds last year, proved he is back and hungry for a place on the New Zealand team for the Beijing Olympics with his outstanding performance today. He was aggressive from the start, leading a small group consisting of fellow New Zealand team member Joe cooper, Waikato's Logan Hutchings and Australian Shaun Finning on just the second of nine laps in the 169-kilometre race.

Roulston applied the pressure continually as the group gradually dropped off with Cooper the last to be dropped with three laps remaining, as he opened a 1'30" advantage.

Australian Will Dickeson took up the chase, flanked by New Zealanders Joe Chapman and Paul Odlin. The trio got to within 35 seconds of the lead but Roulston changed gears to stretch out to a final 1min 34-second advantage.

Auckland's Blair James took the Under 23 honours, run as part of the elite race, finishing fifth overall, just ahead of Waikato's Clinton Avery and Alex Meenhorst.

The Australians took up the charge in the women's race over 112 kilometres with New Zealand's Serena Sheridan and Australia's Ruth Corset moving out to a 3'30" lead. They were hauled in with one lap left to set up a bunch sprint with 15 riders in the peloton.

New Zealand's Cath Cheatley led out Kiesanowski for the spring but Gilmour, a classy professional based in Italy, got up over the New Zealander in the sprint. Kiesanowski finished second from fellow New Zealanders Emma Crum and Cheatley to gain valuable UCI ranking points to keep the team in the top 15 in the world, which will allow three riders for Beijing when the points are finalised at the end of May.

Australia's Jamie Crass won the Under 19 men's race from New Zealanders Patrick Williamson and Tom Scully while Waikato's Emma Petersen won the Under 19 women's race in a sprint from Auckland's Chloe Hosking and Gemma Dudley (West Coast).
