The 2007 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships kicked off Friday as Fort Lewis College won both the Men's and Women's Division I Team Time Trial to capture two national titles and claim the early lead in the overall Division I standings.

The men's Fort Lewis College squad of Chris Kuhl, Joey Thompson, Ian Burnett and Noah Singer turned in a winning time of 23 minutes, 16.6 seconds over the 20-kilometer course to beat runner-up University of Colorado by 13 seconds. The Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference swept the top three spots as Colorado State University placed third, 14 seconds off the pace of Fort Lewis College.

Earlier in the day, the women's Fort Lewis College team of Sabina Kraushaar, Christy Roberts, Kristin McGrath and Molly Hummel clocked a winning time of 27:21.2 over the same course to edge University of California-Davis by eight seconds. Stanford University was third, 18 seconds back.

The collective wins by Fort Lewis College on the opening day of competition gave the Durango, Colo.-based institution a solid lead in the overall standings with Saturday's road race and Sunday's criterium left to contest. Fort Lewis currently has a 25-point lead over defending champion UC-Davis, 168-143. Stanford is currently third in the Division I overall standings with 129 points.

"We will definitely have a target on our backs, commented Thompson after his team's victory on Friday. "There's some luck involved in the other events, so we'll not only have to be smart about our tactics, but also have a little luck. We all have a lot of experience racing, so hopefully that will factory in as well. There are a lot of people that are hungry to win and anything that goes up the road is dangerous."

In Division II competition, Western Washington University moved into the early overall lead by winning the men's team time trial and placing second to Whitman College in the women's event. The men's contingent of Chris Daifuku, Nick Clayville, Phil Elsasser, and Logan Wetzel rode a 23:46.0 to beat Princeton University by 13 seconds, while the University of Denver placed third, 34 seconds off the pace.

In the women's Division II race, the Whitman College foursome of Mara Abbott, Mia Huth, Rebecca Jensen and Kendi Thomas posted a winning time of 28:14.8 to beat Western Washington by just five seconds. MIT placed third, 38 seconds back.

After riding to five stars-and-stripes jerseys at the 2006 championships, Abbott looks to lead her collegiate team to another national title after a successful spring that saw her win the Tour of the Gila and place second overall the Redlands Bicycle Classic - two high-level National Racing Calendar events - with her Webcor Builder's pro squad.

"It was fun out there," said Abbott after the race. "I haven't been able to do as many collegiate races this year, so to be able to come back and be with the girls was just awesome. It's pretty exciting to come back here, especially because two years ago, this was one of my first-ever experiences at a big race. It seemed so huge. It's really interesting to see the little differences in the things that people do between the collegiate events and the professional races and it's pretty fun to be a part of both."

After the team time trial, Western Washington holds a 161-132 lead over Whitman College while Dartmouth is in third with 124 points.

With 18 total national titles up for grabs throughout the weekend, none are more important than the two overall team titles that will be determined on Sunday. Points scored by the men's and women's squads in each division will result in an overall Division I and Division II champion. The University of California-Davis is the defending Division I champion, while Whitman College captured the Division II crown in 2006.

On Saturday, the first of 12 individual titles will be contested as four individual road race champions will be crowned. The Division I and II men will compete in the 85-mile road race, while the Division I and II women will race 56 miles. Points scored on Saturday will also factor into both individual and team overall standings.
