Italian victory in northern Spain

Alberto Loddo (Serramienti PVC - Diquigiovanni) won the second stage of the Vuelta a Asturias from Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval) and Aurelien Passeron (Acqua e Sapone). After a solid ride on the second stage Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval) is the new leader of the general classification.
Unlike the previous stage, the weather was clear when some 130 riders took to the start of the 168 kilometre stage from Llanes to Avilés.
After various breakaway attempts a group of three riders finally escaped at kilometre 30 containing Jesús Ramírez (Extremadura - Spiuk), Óscar Pujol (Spanish National Team) and Rubén Lobato (Saunier Duval). The three reached the only difficulty of the day, the Alto de Robellada (category 3) climb. The trio easily rode over the climb, with Torres the first on the summit, with Lobato and Ramírez close behind.
After 48 kilometres of cooperation, Oscar Pujol Muñoz (Spanish National Team) took the decision to leave his group mates and attempt to cross the 35 second gap to the breakaway. Eduardo González (Spanish National Team) began to cross to the break, Lobato could not longer hold on and fell back to the peloton.
The Spanish pair attempting to make the cross soon had their efforts trumped, as Relax-GAM propelled the peloton forward to swallow not only the national team riders but also bringing the break back. The next two riders to attacked and escaped were Fernando Torres (Extremadura - Spiuk) and again Óscar Pujol. With 55 kilometres remaining on the 168 kilometre stage the pair had a massive four and a half minute lead.
Óscar Pujol was exhausted and could not follow his compatriot Torres, who decided that he could continue alone, and so Pujol left his companion. But Torres didn't stand a chance against the rapidly approaching peloton.
By the 148th kilometre the peloton was back together again, but with the finish line less than 20 kilometres away, the desire for one last escape attempt was at the forefront of every rider's mind. Like many of the day's breaks that attack was lead by a Spanish National Team rider, José Ruiz, and Marcos Serrano (Karpin Galicia).
Serrano quickly realised their attempt to get away was doomed, so he sat up and allowed himself to be caught by the peloton. Ruiz, however, dreamed of the stage win and charged on alone in a 20 kilometre sprint to the finish. Unfortunately for the youngster Serrano's prediction proved accurate and Ruiz was caught with just two kilometres remaining.
As the peloton thundered towards the line a sprint was going to determine the day's victory and after his dominance in sprint finishes at the Tour de Langkawi Italian Alberto Loddo defeated blasted across the line ahead of Spaniard Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval) and the Frenchman Aurelien Passeron (Acqua e Sapone).
Leader's jersey holder Angel Vicioso Arcos (Relax - Gam) came home in 14th, allowing Ventoso to take over the leadership of the Vuelta a Asturias.
Tomorrow's stage should be decisive. Over 180.2 kilometres from the Instalaciones Cafés Toscaf to the Alto de Acebo. Along the way the parcours will reveal three mountains; the Alto del Pozo de las Mujeres Muertas (first category at 97.9 km), the Puerto del Connio (hors catégorie at 139.7 kms) and the mountain top finish on the Alto de Acebo (hors catégorie).
