Jacques-Maynes breaks the break; Pic wins the bunch sprint

Ben Jacques-Maynes of Priority Health has won the opening stage of the Central Valley Classic, attacking a seven-man break with three kilometres remaining to just hold off the charge from Symmetrics' Eric Wolberg and Health Net's Rory Sutherland. "Rory put in a really hard attack from the break with ten kilometres to go," said Jacques-Maynes. "I countered with two kilometres to go over a riser and carried it out to the finish. It was a hard way to win but that's the way I like to do it."

The race organisers changed the road race from previous years held in Kearney Park. The course was changed in every aspect to a 34 mile circuit beginning on a five mile climb and ending with a two mile ascent to the finish. The men's field raced three heated laps on the undulating terrain and relentless wind.

The racing began at the end of the first lap over the climb where a 16-man break split from the field. It included three riders from Toyota-United, two riders from Priority Health and individual riders from Kodak-Sierra Nevada, Colavita/Sutter Home and BMC. However, Health Net had just one rider present up front in Tim Johnson, and that was enough for them to fire their bullets and bring back the break within fifteen miles.

Multiple small breaks were attempted but the course and the wind took their toll on the small groups and they returned to the field. Priority Health's directeur sportif Glen Mitchell was happy with his team's fitness coming from the Tour of California where time trial specialist Ben Jacques-Maynes grabbed a podium spot in the San Francisco prologue and a top ten in the Solvang time trial.

Mitchell's main objective was to have Jacques-Maynes finish today's road race without losing any time to place emphasis on tomorrow's time trial. "There were no points to sit in and recover because there were a lot of climbs and it was very windy, said Mitchell of today's stage. "It had a bit of everything and made for great racing."

The winning break took off on the last lap beginning as twelve and dwindling to seven by the finish line. "Twelve guys slipped away at the start of the last lap on the climb through the feed zone," Mitchell said. "That group dwindled to seven riders that gained seven seconds and we had Ben in there - it was great for the team."

The escapees worked well together until ten kilometres to go when Health Net's Rory Sutherland launched a monster attack that appeared to be the winning move. But the undulations and strong headwind on the final leg proved too much for the Australian.

"Ben likes to be aggressive and likes to show what he can do in a break," continued Mitchell. "Today it turned in our favour. Sutherland attacked ten kilometres out but that was brought back so Ben attacked with two to go. He had a gap but the group was chasing him hard and Wolberg almost caught him at the line."

The Belmont-Piedra time trial kicks off tomorrow morning on a flat, 16.5 mile point-to-point course. Both Rory Sutherland and Eric Wolberg are known for their time trial talents, something that the race leader is aware of. "I only gained a few seconds on Wolberg and Sutherland today and the rest of the field was about thirty seconds back so the race is definitely undecided," Jacques-Maynes said. "The time trial course is good for me and I have good time trial legs right now so I'm looking forward to giving it full gas tomorrow."

Added Jacques-Maynes: "Sutherland, Wolberg and Baldwin are great time trialists too and I will have to put out a significant effort to retain the lead tomorrow."

Pic helps fund breast cancer research

In the women's race, Colavita/Sutter Home's Tina Pic waited until the final 150 metres to overtake Tibco's Brooke Miller and Cheerwine's Kelly Benjamin in the bunch sprint. "Brooke started the sprint really early and I knew it was so windy," Pic said. "I was sitting on her wheel just waiting for her to go. It was a left headwind, I wasn't getting too much protection so I went off of Brooke's wheel and jumped around her in the last 150 metres."

Much like the men's race, the women's event almost ended in a break of seven riders that got away on the second and final lap. The break slipped off the front after several attacks, initiated by Colavita/Sutter Home at the end of the first lap over the climb. The main group came back together at the bottom of the long descent. There were several reshuffles in the second break until T-Mobile, Team Lipton, Webcor Builders, Aaron's, Tibco and Colavita/Sutter Home were all represented.

Webcor Builders was not content to let the break slip away as their time trial Olympian Christine Thornburn remained in the field. With ten kilometres to go they organised themselves at the front, reducing the gap before the finish. Colavita/Sutter Home also began working at the front when their breakaway rider fell off the back of the break.

"It was so tough out there today," said Pic of the conditions. "I didn't think that break was coming back. But we saw Alison Powers come off and that's when we needed to help Webcor bring it back. Alison was trying to attack the break to get off the front when T-Mobile's Kim Anderson countered her."

The trains began when the break was in close proximity and it was caught with one kilometre to go. The sprinters rallied at the front of the field to fight for the win. "I sort of knew that I went too early and that Tina was waiting for me to do something like that," admitted Miller. "I'm still learning and Tina has not been here for the last few races. I have to give a hats off to her."

This is Pic's second victory of the season after winning the bunch sprint in the final stage of the women's Geelong Tour in Australia two weeks ago. The Colavita/Sutter Home rider is riding a special team edition bike that is highlighted pink to represent breast cancer awareness.

Sutter Home Winery, one of Colavita/Sutter Home title sponsors, are donating $1000 to the Sutter Home for Hope Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every race that Pic wins. "I have raised two thousand dollars now for breast cancer research and I think it is awesome what Sutter Home has created this foundation," said Pic. "The whole idea behind donations to breast cancer is such a big incentive for us. Breast cancer affects so any people. I wish everyone was on the pink bike."
