Boucles de la Mayenne, stage 1; Traksel keeps the lead for the Netherlands

Bobbie Traksel and Niels Albert from the Palmans team took Stage 1 of the Boucles de la Mayenne on Friday. The pair surprised the race favorite Agritubel team (who fielded prologue 2nd and third-place finishers and Tour de France riders Romain Feillu and Nicolas Vogondy).
The French continental Pro Team, which also features TdF squad hopefuls Freddy Bichot and Cédric Hervé, were agressive throughout the stage but were colectively out of the picture when Lithuanian Vytautas Kaupas managed to jump from the chasing group to the two leaders; Frenchman Kevin Lalouette (who took the mountain prizes) and cyclo-crosser Niels Albert.
Traksel was the fastest of the two Palmans riders at the finish line and he took the overall lead in the race thanks to the bonus over from his compatriot Tom Veelers from Rabobank. "It was kind of an easy sprint for me," he explained. "I'm very happy with it because I had three seconds and two thirds since the beginning of the season but no win yet. It's good to feel in good shape one week before the Dutch championship that is a big goal for me."
Traksel, who turned pro with Rabobank in 2001 after years in their development squad, also sees the win as a way to put a string of bad luck behind him. "For the past two years, I've had a lot of crashes," he explained. "Now I'm feeling good again and I hope to get more wins and move back to a bigger team next year."
"I'll do my best to win this race now," Traskel added. But the Boucles de la Mayenne are traditionally full of lead changes so the Palmans team rider will have his work cut out for him.
How it unfolded

After many unsucessful skimishes, local boy Freddy Bichot (Agritubel) was the main rider in today's action, escaping in a solo breakaway early in the race. At km 90, he was rejoined by Benoît Sinner (Agritubel), Olivier Grammaire (SCO Dijon), Ludovic Bret (Vendée U), Kevin Lalouette (CC Nogent-sur-Oise), Samuel Caldeira (Duja Tavira) and Carlos Torrent (Vina Magna). Ten kilometers further, the peloton was all together again.
Lalouette tried to escape again at km 115. Niels Albert (Palmans) went with him. A counter-attack was formed by Sébastien Duret (Bretagne-Armor Lux), Cédric Hervé (Agritubel), Vytautas Kaupas (Jartazi), Gil Martin (Vina Magna), Bobbie Traksel (Palmans), Guillaume Malle (Normandy) and Caldeira.
Traksel and Kaupas caught Lalouette and Albert at km 139. They worked well together. The bunch was led by the Rabobank and Regiostorm, who reduced the gap from over three minutes to under one, but they never caught the four men.
As Palmans was superior in numbers, Traksel didn't have many troubles at the finish. As well as the stage win, Traskel also took the yellow jersey from Tom Veelers.
