Day 9 - July 14: Junior road races

King adds road race title to junior time trial crown

After winning the junior men's 17-18 national time trial title on Friday, Ben King (Hot Tubes) earned his second national championship of the weekend with a commanding victory in the road race as the 2007 USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs.

King distanced himself from the rest of the peloton and finished the 91-kilometre race in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 5 seconds - 7:41 ahead of his teammate and second-place finisher Nick Bax. King, already assured of a nomination to represent the United States at the upcoming UCI Junior Road World Championships in August with his time trial victory, attacked the field on the first of four laps and continued to amass a significant lead. Initially, Carter Jones marked King's move, but eventually fell off the pace to leave King out front alone where he mounted an eight-minute advantage over the field.

"Carter came up and we rode together for about a half lap, but when we hit the hill the second time, I knew a gap had opened up," King explained. "I wasn't sure if the move would stick because I knew there were some strong guys back there, but the next two laps I felt pretty good and in the end it was all or nothing."

As King's advantage grew, the gap eventually became insurmountable as the field never put together an organized chase. In the race for second place, Bax, Cheyne Hoag (JW Dundees-Home Performance) and Danny Summerhill (TIAA-CREF-5280) came to the line in a three-up sprint for second with Bax earning the silver medal over Hoag and Summerhill.

Also competing on Saturday was the junior women's 17-18 category in which Lauren Shirock (BMW-Bianchi) claimed the national title. Competing against 13 other riders, Shirock rode away from her competitors throughout the course of the 73-kilometre race. After ascending the course's major climb on the first of three laps, only Shirock and five others remained in contention for the win - Sinead Miller (UPMC), Ashley James (Nova-IS Corp), Jerika Hutchinson, Erica Zaveta (Cycle Sports) and Samantha Schneider (Mesa Cycles). Shortly after cresting the climb for the third and final time, Shirock and Miller opened up a gap as the other leaders were strung out one-by-one behind. Shirock proved to be the strongest of the lead pair, taking most of the pulls and eventually dropping Miller near the finish. At the line, she had grown her advantage to 2:00 over Miller, while James placed third at 3:34.

"Coming into the race, I was hoping to come in solo across the line, but I knew I had a lot of good competition," Shirock said after her victory. "I attacked up the climb on the third lap and two of us were able to get away. I didn't want it to come down to a sprint, so I drilled it in the final climb up to the finish."

Like King, Shirock will earn an automatic nomination to the U.S. National Team for the world championships by virtue of her winning performance on Saturday. Two weeks ago, Shirock also captured a national title in the individual pursuit at the USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships and eclipsed the world team time standard to earn an automatic nomination to the UCI Junior Track World Championships, held in conjunction with the road worlds August 4-12 in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Two younger fields also contested national championship races on Saturday as Nathan Brown (Juris More) won the men's 15-16 contest and Coryn Rivera (Kahala-La Grange) added a road race title to yesterday's time trial victory in the women's 15-16 category.

Browne finished 1:06 up on silver medalist Cody Foster (Southern Elite) in the 73-kilometre race, while Marshall Opel (Montana Junior Cycling Foundation) placed third, 1:20 off the pace.

Rivera put 2:22 between herself and runner-up Jessie Yeaton (Kaladi Subway), while Jessica Prinner (Athletes by Design) added a bronze medal to the silver she won in the time trial, finishing 4:26 back from Rivera in the 56-kilometre contest.
