Petacchi finally delivers
Eisel takes the lead

Alessandro Petacchi’s fans can take a deep breath of relief: their man is still able to win a bunch sprint with no discussion, and more than that, he’s able to climb again. Stage three of the Tour of Algarve has put the sprinter back on track in the lead up to Milano-San Remo. The Portuguese race also has a new leader with Bernhard Eisel who came second but nowhere close to the Italian star.
"Petacchi was really impressive in the mountains," Eisel explained. "He made the front group and I got dropped. I wasn’t strong enough to stay with the best riders up there but we got back on nearby Portimao (with 30 km to go)."
In the early part of the race, the bunch actually used the same road through the charming seaside town of Lagos and Eisel noticed that it would be a dangerous finale if the roundabout located just before the 2km mark stayed open on the left side. "It wouldn’t have been difficult to close it with a car," the Austrian said. "I told the commissaire at the back of the bunch that he should give instruction but nothing was done. The Milram train and myself turned around on the right side but some riders went left, then we were 100 meters behind about 20 guys. Fabio Sacchi put an enormous effort to close the gap till 1km to go, then Marco Velo set the pace till 200 meters and when Petacchi started sprinting, it was too late for me to react already."

Petacchi confirmed: "It was a hard stage. I’m very happy with my condition, especially in the hills. There was a steep one where I had to climb on the 23. I hope to keep the same shape for the coming goals. Now I can see the hard work pays off. It’s important for me to win once again. To repeat a win means it’s no coincidence."
Petacchi might score again because the two last stages of the Tour of Algarve look to be built for sprinters even more and he’s only three seconds down on Eisel on GC. "It’s nice to have the yellow jersey," the T-Mobile rider noticed. "But I will defend it only on the last day of I still have it. It’s okay for us to control the race a little bit if Milram and Quick-Step give us a hand, but today Quick-Step didn’t ride in the front for one single meter although they had the yellow jersey."
Nowadays bunch sprints seem to be the every day life of professional bike riders. Every attack looks like a suicide effort or just a preparation for one day races as it was the case for Philippe Gilbert. Last year’s Het Volk winner had his first breakaway of the 2007 season but he never had in mind to win the stage. "I knew that sooner or later the bunch would catch us," he said with a hint of disappointment. "What I did today only confirmed that I trained well during the off-season but that’s not a surprise. In a 5-days stage race, I can’t imagine myself staying in the middle of the peloton all the time. At least, I’ve done some efforts for later."
How it unfolded
The stage started without injured riders Juan Manuel Garate (Quick-Step) and Alberto Ongarato (Milram) who had crashed the day before, also without Samuel Caldeira and Daniel Petrov (Duja Tavira) who failed an hematocrit blood test in the morning.
After 50 kilometers, three riders broke clear: Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux), Tom Stubbe (Chocolade Jacques) and Thomas Berkhout (Rabobank). Stubbe went for all three mountain prizes of the day. The trio got a maximum lead of 11.35 at km 77.
Discovery Channel led the bunch in preparation for a counter-attack by Vladimir Gusev. In the Alto da Foia, with 50 km to go, the Russian accelerated, split the bunch in many pieces and eventually went away with Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) and Nelson Vitorino (Duja Tavira). The six riders re-grouped in the front while the peloton was still divided in several parts, the first part being located at 1.20 35 km before the finish.
In the last ten kilometers, Gusev and Rebellin resisted to the return of the bunch more than Gilbert and his group, but they also got caught within five km to go. Alessandro Petacchi easily won the bunch sprint of the longest and supposedly hardest stage of the Tour of Algarve.
