Locals Dominate tough circuit

Unlike last year, when the event was run under wet conditions, riders participating in this year's Prince of Wales Hospital Ride for Life event, held in Sydney's Centennial Park were greeted with sunny blue skies.

The racing got underway with the elite, under 23 and junior 70 kilometre combined event. The pace was high from the start, with numerous attacks in the first few laps of the event up the climb that was featured in the Sydney 2000 Olympics road race. After four laps of the 23 lap event, a break of four riders got a small gap on the field, just one lap later four more riders jumped across the 15 second gap from the peloton to join the leaders.

These eight strong breakaway included previous winner of the event Peter Hatton, who had just returned from the USA where he has been riding with the professional Colavita/Sutter Home Cycling Team, Troy Glennan (NSWIS-FRF), Nash Kent (Northern Sydney) and two junior riders Dale Scarfe and Richard Lang, both riding for the Real Aussie Kids development team.

The break was working together well and slowly built up a lead of over three minutes on the chasing peloton, who didn't see them again until they had two laps to go, when they were lapped by the break away.

Going into the last lap, Troy Glennan attacked the break on the climb, but Nash Kent, showing good form, quickly pounced onto his wheel with the rest of the break just behind. Coming into the uphill sprint for the line, it was Nash Kent who was too quick for his companions, crossing the line in front of the two juniors, Scarfe and Lang.

"It was a good race," Nash told Cyclingnews after the event, "I am happy with how it all went, I have been off the bike for the last two weeks with a lung infection."

The Masters and Women race was staged concurrently with 87 competitor's lining up for the 35 kilometre race. It was fast and furious from the start of the race but a large bunch still remained at the finish to sprint for major honours.

The in form Liam Kelly proved just a little better than Steve Griffiths (St George) to claim major honours whilst John Peppard finished marginally ahead of his Eastern Suburbs team mate David Stevens and David McIntosh (Bicisport).

Amber Jenkins was the winner of women's event finishing just ahead of Katie Jones with World Junior medallist Kaarle McCulloch doing well for third.

The corporate race also attracted a large field with Stewart Campbell of Malabar claiming line honours in a close tussle with Dean King from Bondi with an outstanding ride from Anthony Scott, riding for the Bates Bikes Decks by Design team to claim third ahead of his illustrious brother Warren Scott, a former National champion.

Anthony also claimed the State Under 17 Schools championship ahead of Carle Smith from Northern Sydney whilst a tenth p[lace position from Gavin Bates rounded out the corporate teams championship for the Decks by Design Bates Bikes team.

St George cycling star Jessica Griffiths added yet another title to her growing list with a comfortable victory in the Women's Under 17 Schools Championship over Emma Sprouster and Erika Shepherd, both from Lidcombe, collecting the minor placing ahead of Nicole Harris.

Matt Williams from St George was too strong and powerful in the Under 15's winning with a solo breakaway with Luke Collyer second and Paul Dartaei from North Sydney High School third. It was also a good result for State Champion Kirsty Mills, also from St George, who has now added the Schools championship for under 15 girls to her other major wins this season. St George team-mate Imogen Hines raced well to collect the silver medal.

The Junior U/13 schools championship was torn apart by the two St George stars Nathan Bradshaw and Luke Williams breaking clear in the early stages to claim a conformable first and second placings. Patrick Donelan from Southern Cross finished third with Brendan Cole (Bicisport) fourth.

Alexandria Nicholls from Tamworth displayed the form of a future star with a commanding win in the Girls under 13 with Jade Reynolds second and Parramatta's Amanda Fowler finishing third.
