Paolini ready for Flanders
Compatriot Ballan in best position for overall win

Luca Paolini from the Liquigas team has won the first stage in the Driedaagse De Panne and will go into stage 2 as leader. Paolini beat compatriot Alessandro Ballan (Lampre) in a two-man sprint after a hard finale featuring some classic Flemish hills.
The Italian duo managed to get away from an eleven man group on the last climb of the day. Ballan did most of the work with the eye toward the overall win, granting his compatriot an easy sprint victory.
"I worked hard for this win," said Paolini. "Ballan was interested in the overall win, so our attack worked well, because I was looking for the stage," the former Vuelta a España stage winner explained. The Italian had performed strongly in the E3-prijs Harelbeke, but with this win, he puts himself among the favourites for the Tour of Flanders. "After Milano-Sanremo, I had a cough but I got over it, and this win shows that I am on form for Flanders. I might do something in the other days in De Panne, but I will also save myself for Flanders," Paolini continued.
Ballan pulled hard in front of Paolini during the final kilometres which tired him out for the sprint. "My main goal was to put Joost Posthuma (Rabobank) on as much distance (behind) as possible, and I had a good partner in Paolini," the winner of last year's Trofeo Laigueglia said. "I can recuperate in the upcoming stages to have a go in the final time trial," Ballan explained his aims for the overall win. The 27 year-old also looked back on his crash in the GP Chiasso one month ago. "All the problems I had since that crash have passed, so on Sunday I will be ready."
As promised before the race, Quickstep didn't use their strongest weapon today. They sent Steegmans and Hulsmans to the front line. The latter didn't respond the attacks from Ballan and later Paolini pointed out that he was waiting on a group with Steegmans. "When Paolini attacked, I had to pass," Hulsmans said. His typical role of a domestique was handed over to team leader Tom Boonen.
"Tom worked as a domestique today as he brought us the water bottles. He was the ideal domestique," Hulsmans laughed. "In the Tour of Flanders, we'll be the ideal domestiques for him."

Cold and windy Middelkerke at the Belgian coast hosted the start of the Driedaagse De Panne 2007. The peloton got away with some riders being late to sign in; Leif Hoste (Predictor) and Filippo Pozzato (Liquigas) had to work their way through the crowds to get in touch with their teammates. During the first hour, some riders must have been sleeping given the crashes, but the rain might've been a factor as well. After 45 kilometres, the first attacks were launched and from then on, the peloton speeded through the Flemish countryside.
The classic breakaway of the day, featuring Jan Kuyckx (Tönisteiner), set off after 90 kilometres on the Edelare climb. Despite a maximal advantage of two minutes, Kuyckx was caught by the peloton 65km later, and the finale began with 45km to go. A few minutes later, Frederik Willems (Liquigas) and Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramica Panaria) were the first to get away and they were later joined by Posthuma, Ballan, Hulsmans, Bert Roesems (Predictor), Marcus Eichler (Unibet), Paolini, Frédéric Guesdon (Française Des Jeux), Benoît Joachim (Astana), and David Boucher (Tönisteiner).

In the peloton, there were some nasty crashes featuring Roy Sentjens (Predictor), Gabriele Balducci (Acqua Sapone) and later on also Niko Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques). The frame of the Belgian champion's bike broken, but he was able to continue. Meanwhile Guesdon, Joachim, Willems, and Boucher were dropped after the cobbles of the Haaghoek and the Leberg climb.
On the Stuivenberg – the last climb of the day – Ballan attacked the group. Paolini was the only one who could come back, and the Italian duo stormed towards the finish. Time trial specialists Roesems and Posthuma worked hard to reduce the gap with the leaders while Hulsmans stayed at the back. In front of them, Ballan did most of the work with the eye toward the overall, thereby granting Paoloni an easy sprint victory. The sprint for third place in the group of five was easily won by Kevin Hulsmans.
