Club and South East Regional Championships
After two weeks of great weather Modella turned nasty for CCCC's final road race of the winter season, with cold and gusty winds making thinks very tough for riders, officials and spectators alike. Championship races have a habit of producing small fields but riders defied the conditions to take to the start lines in good numbers.
Last year's Men's champion, Justin Davis (O'Mara Cycles), risked divorce to defend his title - passing up a wedding invitation for a chance at a third straight win. Among the other favourites were three riders in heavy training for the Melbourne to Warrnambool - SHM duo Brendan Rowbotham and Peter Barnett, and Matt Chessum (Fitzroy Cycles). Dirt Riders' mountain bike star Murray Spink (Giant) and Blackburn's Vaughan Bowman (Le Tour Cycles) were out for the overall win and title of Regional Champion.
In the windy conditions and narrow roads leading up the climbs of Heath Hill, the 40 strong bunch began to splinter almost straight away. By the first summit, a select group had formed containing the six favourites, Chelsea's junior star Peter Johnstone (Inexa), Pete Smith (BikeNOW), Cam Winton, Nick Mitchell, Wade Wallace and Craig Johnson. There was little to report on the second lap, save for a spectacular fall by Bowman, who pulled a foot launching an attack and ended up in a road side ditch.
Winton and Wallace lost contact on the final climb, while Smith hung on by the skin of his teeth, reducing the group to nine. Barnett attacked on the final descent, but couldn't hold his advantage into the head wind along Coster Road, and the race came down to a nail biting sprint. Spink hit out early, but couldn't hold off the charge from behind, with the top four riders crossing the line less than half a wheel apart. The big win went to Pete Smith, from Johnstone, Rowbotham and Spink, with Chessum fifth over the line and the third CCCC rider home.
A similarly sized Masters bunch started together, but were competing for two sets of medals, for riders either side of fifty years of age. Again, the strong cross winds caused havoc early, and a group of ten were left in contention by the start if the second lap. Croydon Cycles had two in the break, Roy Clarke and Blackburn's Stefan Kirsch, which put them in the box seat. Also in the hunt for medals were CCCC vice president Frank Cipriano, Darren Cathie, Ken Ford, Boon Chia, Jason Theobald (O'Mara), Steve Hickey, Simon Vandestadt (Pro-Motion) and 'old masters' Doug Garley (Terry Hammond Cycles) and Bruce Will.
The second time over the climbs put paid to the hopes of Will, Chia, Hickey and Vandestadt, and on the final drag to the Costers Road corner Kirsch jumped away. He opened a big lead on the descent, and looked like pulling off the win before the head wind helped the chasers reel him in at the final turn, two kilometres from home.
Kirsch's team mate Clarke responded with a perfect counter attack, and set sail for home. Cipriano made light work of the sprint for second, with Theobald third across the line. By finishing with the leaders Garley took the gold in the 50 plus division, with Will next home three minutes down. Graham Prossor claimed the bronze medal after a long solo ride.
Mary Rogers (Kathy Watt's Personal Training) was the overwhelming favourite in the small women's field which started with the Masters, after the late withdrawal of defending champion Briana James, and she was far too strong for second and third place finishers Denise Bennett (Burnley Finance) and Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy Cycles), winning comfortably.
The Under 17 race developed into a two way battle between Pat Lane (The Freedom Machine) and Brent Tomlinson, who dropped the rest of the combined Under 15 and 17 bunch on the long climb up Heath Hill. The pair was chased all the way by mountain biker James Mowatt (Cycle Science), eventually finishing 90 seconds clear, with Lane producing a good sprint to claim the gold medal. Blackburn's Dale Reith was fourth home, with Shannon O'Brien the third CCCC rider home.
Peter Vlahos (Quick Cycle Coaching) won a very evenly matched Under 15 race after opening a gap in the hills, with the top five time trialling to the finish only ten seconds apart. Peter Ashton claimed the silver just ahead of Trent Morey and Angus Cramp (O'Mara).
The younger juniors tackled an out and back course to the top of Costers Road, which is arguably a tougher climb than those in the reverse direction. Jack Cummings (Bicycle Superstore) proved strongest and won a well earned gold medal ahead of Jacob Schmid, with Jodie Dundas besting her sister Kristan for Bronze. The final gold medals went to Erin Butterworth and Freya Cramp as the sole starters in the Under 19 and Under 11 divisions.
