Casper wins it on final day
Jimmy Casper finished up with the overall win in the Tour de Picardie after two stages were run on the final day. Casper won the morning stage between Saint-Gobain and Nogent-sur-Oise, then placed second in a time bonus sprint in the afternoon's leg between Villers-Saint-Paul and Creil to finish up one second ahead of Cédric Herve (Jean Floc'h-Bretagne) on the general classification. The final stage was won by Sébastien Hinault (Credit Agricole) ahead of Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R) and Yuri Metlushenko (Team L.P.R.).
Cédric Hervé came into the 88 km last stage with just a one second lead over the morning winner Casper. But there were plenty of others within striking distance too, and the stage was very animated. Stéphane Bergès (Agritubel) got things going after 5 km, gaining a half a minute lead that grew until Dumoulin (AG2R) countered at km 16. Dumoulin got within half a minute but gave up the chase. It didn't matter, as Bergès lasted until km 40 before the bunch swallowed him.
Cofidis was working for Casper for the first intermediate sprint at km 50, and when the riders returned to Creil for the first time, Casper placed second behind Credit Agricole's Jimmy Engoulvent. That put him in the virtual leader's jersey, although the stage finish was worth seconds too.
After the sprint, the stage winning move went with Ludovic Auger (Française des Jeux), Daniele Contrini, Yuri Metlushenko (LPR), Samuel Dumoulin, Christophe Riblon (AG2R), Paul Martens (Skil-Shimano), Ben Johnson (Agritubel), Sébastien Hinault (Credit Agricole), Laurens Ten Dam (Unibet), and Pedro Arreitunandia (Barloworld). The group got a handy lead of 1'10 with 27 km to go, but then the chase started.
Cofidis was happy to sit back, because none of the leaders were a threat to Casper. But Chocolade Jacques and Androni Giocattoli had other ideas, and started to bring them back. Ultimately, they couldn't, and the group stayed away by 20 seconds. Hinault won the stage ahead of Dumoulin and Metlushenko, while Casper ended in yellow thanks to his time bonus.
