Steegmans takes stage and yellow
After a fourth place finish in stage 1 and a win in today's second stage, Davitamon-Lotto's Gert Steegmans has grabbed the lead in the Tour de Picardie. Steegmans won a 42 rider bunch sprint ahead of Sébastien Hinault (Credit Agricole) and Saïd Haddou (Auber 93) to take over the lead from Rony Martias (Bouygues Telecom), who missed the4 front group.
The 186.5 km stage between Nesle and Marle saw a breakaway of two riders after 5 km: Christophe Agnolutto (Agritubel), and Bert Scheirlinckx (Jartazi). Coincidentally, Bert's brother Staf was also involved in a two man early break (with Sylvain Calzati) in the Giro d'Italia today. But the pair were caught after 30 km, and plenty of counter-attacking ensued. Jeremy Roy’s (FDJ), Stephane Bergès (Agritubel) and Laurens Ten Dam (Unibet) got clear after 33 km, and gained a maximum of 7'50 after 101 km.
Bouygues started to chase and brought the gap down, with the help of Bretagne-Jean-Floc’h, and at the first passage of the line in Marle (161.5 km), the break had just 2'00. Roy was the first to be dropped, then Bergès crashed at 10 km to go, leaving just Ten Dam in front. At this stage, the peloton had split with Martias not making the front group.
Ten Dam put in a huge effort but was swamped by the 40-strong chase group in the final few hundred metres of the stage, and finished 30th. A crash didn't prevent Steegmans from winning ahead of Hinault and Haddou, with Steegmans also taking yellow.
