Wiesenhof crowns Peace Race with second stage win

Wiesenhof-Akud took the final two stages of the Peace Race, much to the small team's delight. On Friday, Lubor Tesar won his fourth stage in his seventh (and last) Peace Race, and on Friday, veteran Torsten Schmidt was the first over the finish line in Hannover, Germany.
Schmidt escaped with 25 km to go and said, "I wanted to make things a little easier for the team. Because I was in front, they could relax and concentrate on the sprint preparations. But it's really fantastic, that I was actually able to come through!"
Schmidt, who last year rode for the Pro Tour Team Gerolsteiner, added, "It's something special for me to win in Hannover. The team did really well in the German stages and was always in the middle of things. With two stage wins we more than exceeded expectations."
Tesar, who is retiring at the end of the season, said, "This is my last Peace Race. There can't be a better way to say good-bye. We had so many fans along the way, I had to win a stage to say thank you."
The overall winner was Giampaolo Cheula (Team Barloworld), who commented, "It's cool to finally come back and taste the joy of winning."
It was only the fourth pro win for the Barloworld rider, with his previous three victories all coming in 2002. He took over the leader's jersey on the race's sixth stage, and is only the second Italian to win the race. "Big thanks to my Barloworld teammates," he said. "I wish to pay tribute for their excellent work. This success will be the best gift for my 27th birthday next week."
