Hondo caps his comeback with first victory

Danilo Hondo (Lamonta) sprinted to win the stage and take over the leader's jersey in the 58th Peace Race on Sunday in Ceske Budejovide, Czech Republic. It was his first victory after returning to the peloton after a doping-related ban. He outsprinted a 10 man group, finishing ahead of Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof-Akud) and his teammate Andre Schulze (Lamonta).
"The winning feeling was exactly as good as it was before my ban," said the happy winner. "The knot has been untied. We had pre-arranged that Andre would prepare the sprint for me. It worked out perfectly."
Nasty weather accompanied the riders on much of their 177 km, with rain, heavy wind and a strong hailstorm. Harald Starzengruber (Elk Haus) and Stefano Boggia (Ceramica Flaminia) broke away and stayed away until 25 km before the finish, achieving a lead of up to 4'50. "But nobody was really interested in letting them get away," said Hondo. "There are a lot of good sprinters in the race, so a lot of teams worked together to prepare the mass sprint."
In the end, Boggia had to give up his attempt. "I was sick, hadn't eaten anything, and couldn't keep up. I had cramps in my legs," he said. Starzengruber tried to keep on going, "But the wind was too much for me. It was what beat me."
Two riders involved in crashes finished the stage but were taken to the hospital directly afterwards. Sebastian Siedler (Milram) and Alberto Tiberio (Health Net) were both believed to have broken bones.
Monday's stage covers 167,1 km within the Czech Republic, from Beroun to Karlovy Vary. It is another rolling stage with two intermediate sprints.
