Khatuntsev takes the queen stage

The time had come for the moment of truth, as the 100+ field was flocking together at the starting line of one of the toughest courses in the world. No end of chilling downhills and leg-wrenching 20 per cent climbs - a wild rhythm few are able to master.
The 20-year-old Trusov, apparently no climber at all, was ready to call the shots. No matter that before the prologue of 5 Rings two other members of Tinkoff Restaurants-S7 Airlines team had been named general classification contenders. A crash for Alexander Serov on the first day of the race meant they were less one rider – he soldiered on, but his knee and back couldn’t stand extra effort that separates a winner from just another rider in the peloton. But the other contender, Pavel Brutt, held on, stood high on GC, and was back to his favourite terrain. Throw in the aforementioned yellow jersey ambitions of Nikolay Trusov, and you get a formula leaving some room for the team’s maneuver.
But the Muscovites from Omnibike-Dynamo were daydreaming about the revenge. Their top hope Alexander Khatuntsev, though clad in Russian national team uniform, enjoyed the support of three different squads sharing the same goal, and had demonstrated his peak form a week earlier winning GP of Moscow on the same course.
Alexander and his teammates started to dictate terms on the course they had covered hundreds of times at racing speeds. The yellow jersey missed the boat when Khatuntsev and K went all out, yet hoping to bring the break back to the peloton sooner of later. Pavel Brutt and his Tinkoff’s teammate, Olympic points race champion Michail Ignatiev caught the wheels of the breakaway, but the numbers were definitely not in their favour. Nikolay Trusov and Ivan Rovny were desperately trying to bridge the gap, but the disheartening nature of Krylatskoye (where a rider more than 1 minute in front gets out of sight and out of mind of his chasers) ruined their efforts.
There were 10 riders in the decisive breakaway that started to fall apart on the final lap. At the bottom of the last climb leading up to the 100m-long false flat to the finish an uphill sprint duel started. Well, Brutt and Ignatiev were utterly inseparable in this race. The Olympic champion is always ready to keep away all the thoughts of his status giving himself up to teamwork. Pavel was a designated leader for the GC, and Mikhail protected him at all costs.
But the cost of his final move proved too high. He pushed his friend forward, madison-style, to the utter amazement of the jury! Although Brutt cross the line second, after Alexander Khatuntsev, he received a 30 seconds penalty (as well as Ignatiev) subsequently relegating him to 10th and out of contention for the GC, as the fifth stage of the race was too flat to change any strategic outcomes.
Not only the new wearer of the yellow jersey was decided in Krylatskoye, but also the king of the mountains, with experienced Belorussian Aliaxandr Kychinsky dressed in green on the podium.
