Trusov makes history

The second stage of the race had been scouted out more than thoroughly three days before, during the Mayor’s Cup one-day race. The distance and the circuit were exactly the same, the weather this time was a bit cooler and less windy. As for the yellow jersey wearer’s team, number one squad Tinkoff Restaurants-S7 Airlines, they would have to improvise all the same, as on May 3 only their junior teammates had raced here.
With much more impressive start list the race developed differently from what we had seen on Wednesday – there were no suicidal breaks as the situation was easily kept under control by the top guys. They allowed only one attack to succeed, letting three riders stay in front; Alexey Bauer (who had already shown himself as a diehard in Krylatskoye, taking part in an early breakaway and making top ten despite being caught), Artem Ovetchkin (a skinny fellow apparently not cut out for long pulls on the flat, but a proven useful worker) and Vladimir Schekunov (this time representing Lokomotiv, Tinkoff’s development squad) as a “delegate”. The main pack was almost constantly controlled by 10 guys who were at their GC leader’s disposal. They played cat-and-mouse with the break, sometimes getting as near as 20 seconds, then letting them go as far as 1.5 minutes.
Finally, with some five laps (about 40 km) to go the break was caught – just for another one to pull off. There were some pretty experienced Omnibike riders in it, which didn’t suit Tinkoff Restaurants at all, and they started to chase hard, the most powerful leads given by self-sacrificing but injured rider Alexander Serov. The group was compatto at the beginning of the last lap and, as opposed to the final of Mayor’s Cup, everything was decided in a high-speed, slightly downhill mass sprint. It took a photo finish to make sure that the victory went to…Nikolay Trusov! A hat-trick, his third triumph in a row. In its 14-year history 5 rings had never seen anything like that.
Yet another 10 bonus seconds consolidated Trusov’s position in front, and it started to become more and more evident to all his opponents that there was no beating a powerhouse like Trusov when at his best. “It looks like in this bunch of classy fellows no one’s gonna stop him, for he belongs to a different league at the moment,” some experts chuckled between themselves. The only way to overcome Trusov might be by setting the Queen stage (stage 4) as a priority to try and overturn the GC.
