Baldwin & Armstrong fastest up the hill

On a cold and wet Friday afternoon in southern California, the top two men's domestic squads squared off on a short twisty climb that rises 1375 feet in 3.8 miles. Exactly one year ago on this same course and in similar weather conditions, the Health Net squad swept the podium to set the tone for one of the most dominating seasons ever seen. But today was not the day of the men clad in green and orange, rather it was the day of the patriotic men in the red, white and blue of the new Toyota-United team who swept the top three spots led by reigning US National Time Trial Champion Chris Baldwin.

While Toyota-United looks to have a stranglehold on the GC, the ample time bonuses available in the next two stages mean that any one in the top 20 could mathmatically assume leadership of the race if they won all of the time bonuses on offer. Look for attacks from all sides looking to test the strength of Toyota-United.

In the women's race the first leaders jersey went to Kristin Armstrong (Lipton) who also won this stage last year. While the time gaps are larger than in the mens race it is far from over with T-Mobile's Kimberly Baldwin lurking just 13 seconds behind.
