Menzies too strong while Pic snares stage win
Overall honours a matter of bonuses in men's and women's races

Karl Menzies (Health Net) has further proved his status as one of the hottest riders in the NRC with a win in the second stage criterium of the Redlands Classic. Menzies won on a day when the team was protecting fellow Australian Nathan O'Neill's overall lead; with directeur sportif Jeff Corbett saying after the finish he was, "extremely pleased with the way the team road in defence of Nathan O'Neill's leader's jersey." With Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) just 12 seconds back and five intermediate time bonuses - as well as more on the finish line - up for grabs, protecting the lead was no simple task.
"Frankly, I was a bit nervous today because of all the time bonuses," said Corbett after the finish. Health Net took control of the race from the first corner and maintained it until the final two laps when Jelly Belly took over to set up Alex Candelario and Brice Jones for the finish. Coming into the final lap, Menzies was sitting fourth wheel behind Candelario, Jones and J.J. Haedo (Toyota-United Pro). Menzies attacked on the gentle downhill nearing the finish, with Haedo jumping on his wheel for the 400 metres.
The strong man from Tasmania got to the third last corner - a hard right - first and came through hot. Just behind him, Haedo couldn't negotiate the turn quite as well and dropped back a little. "I really didn't know what was going on behind me," said Menzies following his win. "I didn't look back. I took the last two corners and looked back and saw I had a gap and just kept going hard." Behind Menzies, O'Neill was well protected on the stage, finishing 18th, with four teammates around him coming across the line.

Menzies secured a total of 20 bonus seconds - enough to move him up to seventh overall from 14th, while also earning the green sprinter's jersey. And while it wasn't necessarily a team goal to take many of the intermediate time bonuses during the race, it worked out that way. Menzies said that spirits are high in the Health Net camp ahead of the final stage, a 142km road race. "Everyone is super motivated for Sunday's stage." With more time bonuses on offer, it may still come down to a matter of seconds for the overall win.
In the women's race, it was a similar story to the men's race; a battle for the overall lead and that for the stage. In the race for overall honours, it was a matter of time bonuses as Amber Neben held a one-second lead over Lipton's Kristin Armstrong going into the day. Armstrong won the first time bonus of the day and collected three seconds. Three laps before the second time bonus T-Mobile's Ina Teutenberg launched an attack that no one could follow and gained an advantage of 10 seconds as Team Lipton went to the front and brought her back, setting Armstrong up for another three-second time bonus.
At this point teams and riders started to shift their attention to the race for stage honours. With four laps to go Teutenberg once again put in a strong attack which was immediately covered by Colavita Cooking Light's Sarah Tillotson and Tina Pic. Colavita then gathered together to keep the pace high as Dotsie Bausch and Sima Trapp worked hard to up the ante. With a lap to go it was three Lipton riders on the front, followed by Pic and Tuetenberg. At the finish it was Pic followed by Tuetenberg, with Lipton's fast finisher, Laura Van Gilder, in third.
