Self control makes Fukushima a winner

Organized since 1975, but internationally sanctioned for the last four years only, the Boucles de la Mayenne has never had a Japanese winner before but Koji Fukushima is a very valuable one. Not only was he the only rider to have dared to go in the crucial breakaway for two days in a row, but he also guided his team as a true captain on the final day despite the heat (30°C) and the difficult terrain.
Fukushima's Yahoo! Japan team didn't panic when Lithuanian champion Aivaras Baranauskas (Agritubel) and recent winner of the 1.1 GP Plumelec Cédric Hervé (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) led the charge in the name of the two French professional teams who obviously didn't want to be beaten on home soil. The gap between the bunch and the two riders away stayed around three minutes for a long time, and Baranauskas was never caught.
Before reaching the final circuit in Laval, as the time was down to one minute, and the yellow jersey was victim of a flat tyre with 35km to go. "The rest of the riders have been nice to me", Fukushima said afterwards. In a spirit of pure fair play, the whole bunch slowed down and waited for the race leader to come back. The way Team Yahoo! Japan conducted its race had earned everyone's respect.
They kept chasing hard on the final circuit. Runner up Markus Eichler (Regiostorm) attacked with two laps to go. He had 34 seconds to regain. "He was riding flat out for GC, I chose his wheel and that's how he led me the sprint out at perfection," stage winner Franck Charrier said. The fast man, 28, had never won internationally before. He wears the colors of CC Nogent which is by far the most successful French amateur team this year, also leading the amateur French cup.
"I'm delighted," Koji kept saying. He was extremely happy and played harmonica on the final podium. Nothing new for the people who have seen him in action at Le Tour de Langkawi, but he surprised the crowd with a local Breton melody!

Everyone in cycling likes to see friendly winners like Fukushima.
How it unfolded
Mikaël Chérel (French national team) and Timothée Lefrançois (Team U Nantes-Atlantique) were the first attackers after the start in the little village of Le Horps, but Aivaras Baranauskas (Agritubel) and Cédric Hervé (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) were the first to manage to go away from the peloton at km 18. Successively, Johan Lindgren (Team U Nantes-Atlantique) and Julien Belgy (Vendée U) attacked from the bunch and chased together for a long time but never made it across to the two leaders who reached a maximum advantage of 4:06 at km 95.
In the last climb of the race, the côte de la Galette, with 40km to go, Hervé blew and let Baranauskas continue on his own. On the final circuit in Laval, Eduard Vorganov (Omnibike) and Franck Charrier (CC Nogent) rejoined the Lithuanian champion, so did another trio formed of Christophe Diguet (Team U Nantes-Atlantique), Antoine Dalibard (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) and Markus Eichler (Regiostorm-Senges).

The regrouped six men played the stage win and Charrier was the fastest while Koji Fukushima (Yahoo! Japan) was a safe overall winner in the middle of the bunch only 14 seconds behind.
