Pete Lopinto (KodakGallery-Sierra Nevada) lapped the field along with five other riders, but still had enough to take the field sprint in the final NRC race of the 2007 International Cycling Classic. "Dan Schmatz led it hard down the back stretch," said Lopinto about the final lap. "We only have four guys here and I was even with [Mike] Friedman going into the second-to-last turn. But Jonas said to be first into that final turn!"

The Bensenville Criterium had quite a makeover, with the municipality forcing the organisers to drastically alter the race course. The outcome was a .8 mile, eight turn figure eight course -- one turn per tenth of a mile. The dangerous and technical course was made even more difficult with the finish line located at a 90 degree turn! The organisers were able to secure a straight run-off after the line for the final lap, but it meant no sprints or primes during the race.

The final turn that KodakGallery-Sierra Nevada director Jonas Carney told Lopinto to hit first was a 110 degree bend a little more than 100 meters from the line. "I almost crashed coming through the turn," said Lopinto.

Initiating the break was last night's winner Mike Friedman (TIAA-CREF) who utilized the plethora of tight turns to make his move. "I can corner better than most, so I just drilled it through the turns and saw who could come with me," he said. Coming with him was a selection of top Superweek riders, including Danish rider and Superweek veteran Jacob Nielsen (Glud & Marstrands), Adam Hodges-Myerson (Nerac.com), Swede Stefan Adamsson (Team Milram), Lopinto and Keith Norris (AEG-Toshiba-Jet Network).

The break worked well, gaining a lap on the field quite quickly -- much to the relief of Lopinto who suffered from the extreme July heat. The pavement today was measured at 131 degrees Fahrenheit. "It was a good thing we lapped early with the heat!" he said.

The professional women finished their series today with series leader Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine) staying safe in the field while a breakaway took the final stage. In an odd finish, the two riders in the break decided to neutralize the finish and crossed the line together.
