Australian team report

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team was in Carrara, Tuscany for the GP del Marmo. The race is over 167 km and takes in four climbs into the area’s famous marble quarry which involves a pretty tough climb and a long narrow tunnel and tricky descent. We had eight riders being Chris Sutton (AIS/NSWIS), Matt Goss (AIS/TIS), Nic Sanderson, Simon Clarke and Seam Finning (AIS/VIS), James Meadley (AIS/ACTAS), Matt Rex (AIS/SASI) as well as Dan McConnell (VIS) from the mountain bike program.

An early break of 15 riders soon formed containing Sean Finning. They were not caught for over 100 km and when the chase began in earnest the field blew apart. Matt Rex was lucky not to be hurt after crashing over the side of road on the descent the second last time down. He was taken to hospital for a check up but allowed to leave.

The final bunch of about 30 riders contained four Aussies. A group of three went clear containing eventual winner, Alessio Signego from Promociclo. Simon Clarke came in just off the lead group to run 5th and James Meadley took 7th. Simon also ran 3rd in the mountains competition.
