Navigators remain in charge in Connecticut
Davidenko uses Baldwin to take second stage in a row

"When you have a sprinter as good as Vasilli [Davidenko], there is no shame in being a worker bee!" So said Navigators Insurance's Chris Baldwin, after putting in a huge effort in the closing laps of the 100km climbing circuit race to serve his teammate and close friend a second win in the Tour of Connecticut.
For Davidenko, this season serves as an end to his cycling career, and all his friends on the Navigators team are working hard to give him a proper send-off. "In the past few years we didn't see what he is really capable of," explained Baldwin. "I'm thrilled to see him go out on a high note!"
The second stage of the race saw fifteen laps of a 4.1-mile course that wound through the neighborhoods of Waterbury, climbing a total of more than five hundred feet each lap. What made things even more interesting was a very technical and rough descent back into the town center, with the cold Connecticut winter taking its toll on the road surface. Amazingly, only one major crash occurred on the course when a rider's handlebars broke, causing him to careen off the road near the top of the descent, with his fork broken off the frame and a shoe left clipped into a pedal.

For the Navigators, the day started out low-key as an attack early in the race saw TIAA/CREF's Tim Duggan alone on the front. Duggan rode strong for more than seven laps, gaining as much as a minute and twenty seconds on the field, thanks in part to a late bridge by Todd Wells (CVC). However, with less than six laps to go the field, consisting of only about thirty riders at this point, reeled in the break. From there, the Navigators continued their position on the front as race leaders. "Yesterday we controlled like seventeen laps of the race, but today we only had to start with five [to go]," said Davidenko.
After seeing four laps to go, ten riders broke off the front, with race leader Davidenko flanked by teammates Mark Walters and Baldwin easily making the selection. "With three to go we showed we were the strongest team in the race," said Walters. Also in this group was Charles Dionne (Webcor Builders), Dominique Perras (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) as well as Mark McCormack and Davide Frattini of Colavita Olive Oil-Sutter Home.
After another lap, Frattini continued an attack started by teammate McCormack that split the group down to four, with Baldwin towing Davidenko up the climb and Perras also hanging on. From there Baldwin took over, setting a pace so fast that the other two could only hope to hang on. "With just four of us I felt really confident, so I told Chris to go fast because I was thinking of trying to get away on the downhill," said Davidenko.

Into the final lap the four were led by Baldwin's pace making. Coming off the descent into town the quartet of riders remained intact and the tactics began to unfold. "[Baldwin] made it so fast it was impossible to jump on the last lap," said Frattini. "I tried to take Davidenko but he is such a good sprinter."
Baldwin led the four around the town square finish with two ninety-degree left turns ahead, and gave Davidenko enough of a gap so that the Russian could sit up with 50 meters to go and enjoy the victory. "Baldwin did a great job for me today -- I owe this all to my teammates," said Davidenko. Frattini held on for second place and Baldwin managed third. Perras had to settle for fourth, but strong riding up the climbs insured his victory in the KOM category, with Geoff Kabush (Jittery Joe's-Kalahari) three points behind in second.
Tomorrow's final stage is a long 220km point-to-point race starting and finishing in Torrington, CT. The very hilly course features three sprints and two KOM's, with one climb sporting a 18-22% gradient. The race winds in a counterclockwise loop of 190km, coming close to Massachusetts and New York, before returning to 30km of finishing circuits in Torrington.
