Eeckhout excels in the wet

Belgian strong man Nico Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques) has won the second stage of the Driedaagse van De Panne, which finished in a bunch sprint in Sint-Idesbald, Koksijde. After a 230 km day in wet and soggy conditions, Eeckhout powered home ahead of Allan Davis (Liberty Seguros) and Luciano Pagliarini (Liquigas-Bianchi). The race lead remained with Alessandro Ballan (Lampre), who will have to defend it against Stijn Devolder (Discovery) and Luis Sanchez (Liberty) in tomorrow's time trial.
"I felt really good today," said Eeckhout to VRT. "In a bunch sprint, everything has to go right for me, and it did today. The aim was not to get boxed in on the last corner. That worked and then Bäckstedt led out the sprint. I came from a long way back, but probably that's the best for me.
An exhausted Allan Davis said that he just didn't have it in him. "It was a bit of a hard sprint," he said. "The day was pretty long and everyone got to the finish. I had to try whatever was left in the legs. Nico hit out early, I tried but I couldn't get him."

The second stage from started in Zottegem without German sprinter Danilo Hondo (Gerolsteiner), who pulled out after suffering from fever last night. On the other hand, Belgian Tom Boonen (Quick.Step) was present, despite having three stitches to the middle finger of his left hand yesterday following a crash. Boonen's luck continued today when he crashed together with teammates Guido Trenti and Davide Bramati, but this time he came off lightly. Although today's stage would have suited him, he chose to ride out the race out of harm's way, and did not contest the sprint.
The breakaway of the day was established early on when Ludovic Cappelle (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Christian Knees (Wiesenhof), Carlos Barredo (Liberty Seguros) and Leonardo Duque (Jartazi Granville) escaped. Barredo was the only danger man, as he started the day in 40th place, just 5'11 behind leader Alessandro Ballan (Lampre). Thus, Lampre could set a controlling tempo, allowing the group to get a maximum of 6'00 before letting Davitamon-Lotto and MrBookmaker take over in the final 50 km to bring the quartet back.
After almost 200 km out in front in the wet, the leaders had no choice but to give up time as the chase started in earnest. For Lotto, it was Van Summeren, Steegmans, De Vocht and Van Petegem doing the bulk of the work in the hope that their sprinter Tom Steels would take out the stage. Bringing the break back was the easy part, but leading out Steels proved to be difficult.
The leaders managed to make it to the final 14 km finishing circuit before they were all caught with 12 km to go, as Barredo and Capelle shook hands in recognition of their five hours of cooperation. Lampre moved to the front to protect Ballan and then Quick.Step took over in the final two kilometres in the hope that Dmitri De Fauw would come through with the honours. But it was for nothing as the chaotic run for the finish saw Allan Davis go up the centre of the road and Nico Eeckhout strike out on the right hand side. The Belgian proved the stronger and won his second race in eight days
Tomorrow's conclusion to the Driedaagse van De Panne will see a 116 km stage in the morning suited to the sprinters, followed by an afternoon time trial around De Panne that will determine the final winner.
