28th Cholet-Pays De Loire - 1.1France, March 20, 20052004 Results Results Past winners Pierrick Fedrigo opens the books for Bouygues TelecomBy Jean-François Quénet in Cholet
Being one of the last six UCI ProTour teams without any wins so far this year, the new born Bouygues Telecom - built on the foundations of the foundations of the Bonjour and La Boulangère teams - was highly motivated on its home soil of Cholet near the Vendée area where the Tour de France will hold its Grand Départ again this year. "We haven't impressed anyone yet," French champion Thomas Voeckler declared after Paris-Nice. Newcomer Pierrick Fedrigo, recruited from Crédit Agricole duly landed the team's first win yesterday at Cholet-Pays de Loire, the third leg of the French Cup. On the same finishing line where Stuart O'Grady was awarded his first yellow jersey, back in 1998, Fedrigo was the only man from the final breakaway remaining in the peloton. Earlier on, the race went full gas all the way, as showed by the average speed of 43.1km/h on a hilly course. Before half way, Simon Gerrans of Ag2r escaped with Noan Lelarge from Bretagne-Jean Floc'h. The two riders got a maximum lead of 1'20''. Gerrans may hail from Jamieson, Victoria, but he knew all the climbs close to the Loire river since he rode in that part of France for U Nantes-Atlantique last year. That probably helped him to take the KOM competition over this time. "When we got caught by a group, no one really wanted to ride," he explained. "We kept attacking each other all the time." There were many big names though, such as three times winner Jaan Kirsipuu and his new team-mate Patrice Halgand (Crédit Agricole), David Moncoutié (Cofidis), Stéphane Goubert (Ag2r), José Alberto Martinez (Agritubel), Nicki Sørensen (CSC) and up and coming Swede John Nilsson (Auber 93) in a 24-man group, that was later re-joined by another 15 riders. On the last hill, located with 40km to go, ten riders broke clear: Fedrigo, Didier Rous, Anthony Charteau, Unai Yus (all from Bouygues Telecom), Frédéric Bessy (Cofidis), Christophe Mengin (Française des Jeux), Halgand, Nilsson, Goubert, and also Sørensen who was unlucky to have a flat tyre. On the final circuit, at the bell lap with 5km to go, Fedrigo attacked under the advice of Rous. Only Halgand and Nilsson were able to follow him. As the bunch was getting close, never more than 6 seconds down, Fedrigo attacked again 500 metres before the line. "Because of the head wind, I was riding flat out close to the barricades," he said, extremely happy to erase the bad memories of Paris-Nice where he had been forced to pull out two days prior to the finish in Nice. At the time, probably affected by the aftermath of a flu, he was left with no legs, and no morale either. "I trained well during the week," Fedrigo said. "I was only afraid of having raced to few kilometres at Paris-Nice." Most of the competitors of Cholet-Pays de Loire were actually very fresh because of a lack of racing. The ProTour calendar has left many riders at home recently. Since they battle for starts, many riders are very hungry when they finally get a chance to race. That's why the race has had this thrilling scenario with a complete suspense till the very end. Alberto Benito of Portuguese continental team Barbot-Pascoal came second again, two days after producing the same result at the Classic Loire-Atlantique. Fedrigo now leads the French Cup, level with Philippe Gilbert - who was busy finishing sixth in Milan-San Remo instead of defending his lead - with 50 points.
