Australian team report

By Brian Stephens, AIS U23 team manager

On Sunday tha AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team headed to Rimini for the 34th Coppa Pace, an International Elite / Under 23 race over 166km. The course started with two flat 22km loops followed by eight laps of a shorter circuit with which included a tough climb. Besides the our Aussies, ex-AIS riders, Gene Bates (Zalf) and Ash Humbert (Italfine) were there riding for their Italian teams.

Chris Sutton went with an early break that was caught after 80km when the action started on the hard circuit. Finally a small group of three including Gene Bates got clear to fight out the win with Gene being narrowly beaten by Belarusian, Vasil Kirienka, riding for Grassi. Our best was Simon Clarke who ran 18th.

This was won by Australian Olympic silver medalist Clyde Sefton in 1972.
