Colavita-Sutter home dominates field sprint
McCormack, Page and Haedo sweep top three -- Wherry still in yellow

Today's stage featured another circuit race through the farms outside of Altoona, with rolling hills, smooth roads and a lot of corn. And like yesterday, the race came down to a field sprint with Colavita-Sutter Home calling the shots. But unlike yesterday, the team was not able to get the first two spots on the podium... they took all three, with McCormack in first.
"I was just leading out J.J. and Page, but we opened up a gap." said McCormack. With another tough run into town, the seasoned Tour de'Toona veteran used his knowledge of the course to his advantage. "We knew it was critical to get to the first right hander first," said McCormack. From that point, McCormack drove the pace around the downtown turns but found his team with an advantage around the final turn, 200 meters from the line. The three had enough of a gap to sit-up and enjoy the 1-2-3 win for the team.
Colavita-Sutter Home was also represented in a long breakaway, again by Aaron Olsen, that lasted for much of the race. "We were rolling smooth and working the best we could," said Olsen, who was joined by six other riders, including Tim Larkin (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) and Jonny Sundt (Jittery Joe's-Kalahari.) The group rolled well together, even with Volkswagen/Trek's Alexandre Lavallee breaking a shifter cable and doing his best cyclocross dismount with the Mavic neutral service team.
"On the fourth lap it started breaking a part," explained Olsen. "I tried to hit it up a hill and Larkin was really strong." The two riders continued on for a short time while the pack continued to chase, lead by Health Net-Maxxis in defense of race leader Chris Wherry. "I really was riding hard to make Health Net have to chase and tire them for the finish."
Within the final ten kilometers Larkin and Olsen were finally caught and the sprint was on for Colavita-Sutter Home. Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's-Kalahari) managed to lead the rest of the field in for fourth. Brad Huff (Mercy Cycling Team) made the most of the first sprint lap before the break got away and regains the lead in the sprint category ahead of Martin Gilbert (Volkswagen-Trek) and previous green jersey Greg Henderson (Health Net/Maxxis.) With no KOM points today, Glen Mitchell (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) holds on to the polka dot jersey, even after suffering mechanicals most of the day.

Nicole Freedman's solo attempt quashed just before line

In another fast-moving stage, few breaks were able to get away for very long -- that is until twelve kilometers from the line when Ford-Basis' manager/leader Nicole Freedman took matters into her own pedals and attacked the field. "I felt horrible all day," said Freedman. "I knew I wouldn't have it for a sprint at the end and a low probability move is better than a no-probability one."
Content to let the dangle off the front the GC contenders let Freedman gain nearly forty seconds. Then T-Mobile and Quark sprang into action, cutting the gap considerably inside the final five kilometers. At four hundred meters, in between the final two turns, the field saw Freedman and the sprint was on. Quark rider Grace Fluery was setting the lead-out pace for teammate Tina Pic, but doing almost too good of a job. "Grace was so fast she dropped everyone, I thought she was going to win!" But as good lead-out riders do, Fluery swung-off and sent Pic to the line ahead of sprint leader Ina Teutenberg (T-Mobile) and Gina Grain (Victory Brewing).
"I was sitting on Tina's wheel but Icouldn't even stay on her," said Teutenberg about the finish. "There were a lot of attacks today -- it was fast." Regardless, Teutenberg keeps her green jersey thanks to two first places and two second places on the day. Race leader Christine Thorburn (Webcor) also keeps her yellow jersey with no GC threats today.
Tomorrow's 149.5km circuit race will be the toughest challenge of the week with three KOM/QOM climbs looking to settle the general classification and climber's jersey.
