Stage 3 - July 27: Perwez - Amay, 155 km
Success for Quick.Step
Luca Paolini won the fourth stage of the Tour de la Région Wallonne, a hard day of 154,4 km from Perwez to Amay. Paolini beat his team mate Filippo Pozzato and Slovenian Phonak rider Uros Murn in the sprint.
"I’m over the moon," Paolini commented. "It has been a while since my last win (Brabantse Pijl 2004). Up until today this season has been really difficult for me. The problem I had with my knee spoiled the beginning of the season for me but I didn’t give up hopes of winning. I’ve done a lot of hard work in getting myself back on form and today’s victory repays me for all of my efforts. During the final section of the stage I was able to rely on the support of my teammates Pozzato and Nuyens, who were great at protecting my attempts to attack. I hope to be able to repay them for their favours very soon."
Right from the gun an eager Nico Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques) and young Matti Breschel (CSC) jumped away. Breschel didn't seem to have too many problems after yesterday's crash and worked with Eeckhout to establish a five minute lead. The stayed out of the grip of the peloton for 100km.
QuickStep team director Serge Parsani then gave his troops the order to get things back together for a sprint. Shortly after the duo was taken back, Eeckhout abandoned the race. Andy Schleck (CSC) and Erki Pütsep attacked, but the small peloton didn't leave them out in front for long.
Although the sprint was being set up for Filippo Pozzato, there was no stopping Luca Paolini after he attacked with five hundred metres to go; Pozzato had to settle for second place.
