Armstrong gets one for T-Mobile
Moninger makes it 2 for 2 for Health Net

Women's racing got underway today at the Cascade Classic with an 81 mile loop around Mt Bachelor and the Cascade Lakes. After a steady tempo on the starting climb, disaster struck on the descent as nearly 20 riders went down in a high speed wreck with bikes flying overhead. Leah Goldstein (Trek - Red Truck Racing Team) and Cat Malone (Webcor) took the brunt of it with Goldstein being airlifted out.
The pack sat up and waited for riders to rejoin for about half an hour before racing again in earnest. At that point T-Mobile took the proverbial bull by the horns and sent attack after attack up the road until Kori Seehafer got a gap just after the first feed zone. She went into full TT mode and grew her advantage to over 2 minutes as the outnumbered Webcor team tried to bring her back.
As the race hit the final 10 mile climb, Seehafer's gap went down to a minute very quickly. After the race Seehafer said "Someone told me it was 20 miles to go when it was really only about 10. That just cracked me mentally." She held on to her lead until just after the QOM at 3 miles to go when her team mates took over.
After Seehafer was caught, it was time for a different magenta clad woman to lead as Kimberly Baldwin attacked bringing Kristin Danielson (Ford-Basis) with her. Then Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile) bridged across giving T-Mobile a 2 to 1 advantage briefly before Erin Mirabella (Bicycle Johns) joined them. Baldwin set a hard tempo allowing Armstrong to sit in and attack for the win. As Armstrong described it "The hardest part for me was patience. I saw the 1k to go sign and I just kept saying to myself 'patience, patience.' Then I saw the left hand arrow going into here and Kimberly was leading so as she went into the corner I went on the inside and I knew that when she saw me do that, just like in a criterium, she would slow things up a little. I just attacked as hard as I could, got a gap, and figured at 200 meters it would be really hard to close that so I just put my head down and went for it."

The men's race was a lot less straight forward as a dangerous group went on the first climb up to Mt Bachelor ski area containing National TT Champ Chris Baldwin (Navigators), Tour of the Gila winner Burke Swindlehurst (Sea Silver), Sea Otter Classic winner Doug Ollerenshaw (Health Net pb Maxxis), Jon Tarkington (Vitamin Cottage) and David Robinson (TIAA-CREF). Riders continued to bridge across including GC threats Scott Moninger (Health Net) and Cesar Grajales (Navigators). Also making the cut was Grajales's teammate Jeff Louder who went right to the front of the now 11 man group to drive the pace with Baldwin.
This group gained a little over a minute advantage and that would be the status quo for about 20 miles until a large group of 14 came across the gap including Health Net powerhouses Mike Sayers and Tyler Farrar. The Health Net boys had a free ride until yet another group of 7 bridged up with overnight race leader Gord Fraser. This changed the tactics such that Health Net were now the ones driving the pace into the base of the final climb in hopes of setting up Moninger.
A daring solo move by a McGuire Real Estate rider lasted for about 10 minutes, but other than that the pack was content to stay together until the final climb.
As the climb began it was Burke Swindlehurst (Sea Silver) who made the first move and stayed away solo for about 2 miles until the reaction came across with the Health Net duo of Moninger and Ollerenshaw, the Navigators trio of Baldwin, Grajales and Louder, and Swindlehurst's teammate Neil Shirley.
Swindlehurst eventually cracked under the pressure of the furious pace-making done by Louder and Baldwin just about the time that Cameron Hughes (Subway) made it across the gap.
Baldwin took the KOM points with 3 miles to go en route to taking over the lead in the climbing jersey competition at the end of the day.
With 2 miles to go Scott Moninger launched a vicious attack that could only be followed by the slightly built Grajales. Baldwin then bridged up to give Navigators the upper hand, but the wily veteran Health Net rider attacked at just the right moment with 250 meters remaining to take the stage victory ahead of Grajales.
After the stage, Moninger said, "I looked over at Grajales and said 'you're ahead of me by 30 seconds on GC, you could ride yourself into the jersey.' But he said 'you're gonna kill me in the time trial!' It was good when Baldwin came up because he drilled it for the last kilometer and I knew it was just going to be him leading Cesar out. Cesar is a great climber, but on a run in like this I've got good acceleration and I can typically recover pretty well at this altitude. I don't think he's that acclimated to 7000 feet because every time I would attack it would take him a while to recover and react to it. I had to redeem myself after yesterday when I got like 22nd place or something like that.
"Things got turned upside down yesterday and then again today so we are kind of rolling the dice and almost treating it like one day races. We're two for two. I can't complain about that."
