The sparsely populated northern Wairarapa is considerably better known for farming than it is for bike racing - so it's a shame there were few people to witness a fine four hours of racing in the fourth stage of the Trust House Cycle Classic.
Today's hundred miler had everything: an early break, a sprinter taking KOM points, a sizeable bunch crash, and a long, tough solo effort reeled in almost within sight of the line.
In the end, Australian Shaun Higgerson (MG Xpower presented by BigPond) prevailed, with Great Britain's Hilton McMurdo (Pravda) second and Peter Latham (Samsung New Zealand) third in the final dash into Masterton's baking hot town centre.
That saw Latham secure yellow for another day, with Higgerson, McMurdo and Matthew Lloyd (Australia -Jayco) now filling second to fourth on the overall classification.
The stage began with an early break - again - with four sprinters getting away in search of sprint points at the 35km mark. First Aaron Rusden went off alone but he was soon joined by Marc Ryan, Hayden Godfrey and Troy Glennan. Godfrey collected the points; they all collected a healthy couple of minutes' lead over the bunch.
The main field then started splintering around Pahiatua, first courtesy of a crash which brought down nine riders, then thanks to the Pahiatua hill and a fresh cross wind on the following straights. By the top of Rongomai hill at 100km, Troy Glennan collected the KOM points, soon before being caught by a sizeable lead group. Not far behind was a second bunch of about 6 and a larger third group.

On the climb, Australian Tony Mann (MG Xpower) made a strong move from the front group, and began an impressive 55km solo effort back towards Masterton - he was only reeled in on the town outskirts. That left the way open for Higgerson's finishing kick. By now twenty minutes behind, the main field substantially regrouped over the last hour, and rolled back at gruppetto speed.
Three days down, two to go. Still to come is a very rugged hill stage, a short, twisting coastal time trial and an inner-city crit. Despite that variety, on today's performance, Olympic track rider Latham looks to be increasingly hard to shift.
