Voigt opens with a win

CSC is continuing its early season blitz with German powerhouse Jens Voigt winning the first stage of the Tour Méditerranéen, which finished in Menton. After attacking on the Poggio with 30 km to go, Voigt crossed the line solo, 17 seconds ahead of the peloton which was led home by French sprinter Jean-Patrick Nazon (Ag2r) and Erik Dekker (Rabobank).
"Now we've really got some hard work ahead of us, but there was no way around it: Jens was in a league of his own today, and he had to snatch the leader's jersey for the word go," said CSC's team director Kim Andersen. "An early break away was allowed to roam free, as no one seemed to react. We stepped up and took responsibility by setting a very fast pace on the two toughest climbs. It was gonna hurt no matter what, so we might as well get on with it.
"The peloton was more or less all together before Poggio, where everything exploded. Jens escaped along with three other riders, and Gussev was close behind. Gerolsteiner rapidly organized a pursuit, and they almost reeled them in on a minor hill shortly before finish. But then Jens attacked true to habit, and the others in the break away had to let go. The solo victory was a reality, and it couldn't have been done in a nicer way.
"Jens is frighteningly strong, but the whole team deserves credit for all the hard work. Everyone is watching us, so we might as well come forward from the start - which we did. We have an exiting race ahead of us, and with several riders on top form we have a brilliant opportunity to make our presence felt from start till finish," concluded Andersen.

The first break of the day was made by Dutchman Roy Sentjens (Rabobank) and Frenchman Michael Delage (Française des Jeux). The pair managed to gain seven minutes over the peloton by the foot of the first climb, the Vasia (km 37). CSC took over the tempo making and by the second climb of the Vasia (km 60), the pair were within striking distance.
Once the breakaways were caught, the action heated up on the final climb of the day, the legendary Poggio (km 100). Voigt attacked together with Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom), Sébastien Rosseler (Quick.Step) and Mirko Celestino (Domina Vacanze), dropping them all on the run into the finish and finishing alone.
