Sabido climbs to victory

After four successive days of bunch sprints, the fifth and last stage of the Volta ao Algarve gave the climbers something to cheer about as it finished atop the Cat. 2 climb of Alto do Malhão. Thus it was Portuguese rider Hugo Sabido (Paredes) who came to the summit first and in doing so clinched the overall general classification. Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) finished second and moved up to third overall, while Jurgen van de Walle (Landbouwkrediet) was led a group home for third. The group contained Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis), who through his consistency managed to hold onto second overall in the tour.
The final stage started in Lagoa at 9:30 with just 46 riders present after most of the peloton was eliminated yesterday for finishing outside the time limit. With 165 km to travel, it took less than 10 km before the day's breakaway got clear. Dutchman Leon van Bon (Davitamon-Lotto) attacked and quickly gained a minute's advantage, but couldn't get completely clear. After 32 km, he was chased by Bram Schmitz (T-Mobile), who crossed the summit of the day's first climb (km 35) half a minute behind Van Bon, with Sabido showing his strength early to take the points for third.
After 40 km, Van Bon and Schmitz were together, and the two Dutchman gradually worked up their lead 3'01 by the top of the day's second climb at km 65. Schmitz took the points here ahead of Van Bon with Bruno Pires (Milaneza) in third. Over the next 25 km, Pedro Lopes (L.A. Aluminios) managed to bridge up to the two leaders, taking second in the intermediate sprint at km 96 with the peloton now at nearly four minutes.

With 45 km to go, the gap inevitably began to fall, but it did so slowly enough that the leaders still fancied their chances. With 7 km to go it was 1'40 but as the Alto do Malhão started, the small bunch caught the break with 3 km to go. Lopes, to his credit, held on for 5th place, but the real honours of the day went to Sabido, who crossed the line with a 15 second advantage over Rubiera, which was more than enough to give him the overall classification.
