Stage 1 - August 26: Criterium

Oklahoma riders dominate first day

The winners of the men's and women's Hotter 'N Hell criterium bicycle races on Friday were no strangers to victory. Aaron Smathers won a sprint of the entire field to capture victory in the 75-minute men's criterium. Smathers of Oklahoma City, who rides for the G.S. Tenzing team, was the winner of the Hotter 'N Hell Road Race in 2004.

In the women's race, Megan Long, also of Oklahoma City, won the women's race. While the women shelled a number of riders during their 45-minute race, Long overcame a strong contingent from the Mercy Cycling Team to win the criterium for the second year in a row.

Smathers gave a lot of credit to his teammates, who helped him to victory in a field that included the new elite national criterium champion, Brad Huff, and a contingent of six Mercy Cycling teammates. Smathers said his team is versatile and can handle different race scenarios well.

"If it comes to a field sprint, we're comfortable; solo, we're comfortable," Smathers said. "You can ask the Mercy riders. I race 'em all the time by myself. I got 'em today."

Long, who is one of the dominant women's riders in the region if not the nation, had no teammates in the race. "They were pretty much staying on me," Long said in a post-race interview. "The Mercy team did a good job of making me race hard."

"I really wanted to win again," she added. "It's nice to find a race that respects women."

In the men's race, second place went to Edgar Ibarra of Mesquite, Texas, and third place when to Chris Powers of Flower Mound, Texas. For the women, second place went to Mindy Martin of St.Louis, Mo., and third went to Beth Allen of Austin, Texas.

The Hotter 'N Hell weekend continues on Saturday with road races for all categories and a tour that is expected to attract approximately 9,000 riders to ride distances of 100 miles to 25 miles.
