Preview

The 41st Tour de l'Avenir will be run in its traditional calendar slot in early September, featuring 10 challenging stages over 1,518 km. The race is limited to U25 riders and is considered a mini-Tour de France - one of the most important races for young riders.

The Tour was first run in 1961 and includes among its past winners names such as Felice Gimondi, Joop Zoetemelk, Greg LeMond, Charly Mottet, Olaf Ludwig, Miguel Indurain, Marc Madiot, Laurent Fignon, Johan Bruyneel and more recently, Denis Menchov, Evgeni Petrov and Egoi Martinez. Lance Armstrong has also raced in it, winning the mountains classification in 1992, the year before he won the World Road Championships in Oslo.

The race starts on the coast with a beachside time trial in Fort-Mahon before moving inland. The toughest stages come near the end, with Stage 8 from Gérardmer to Morteau featuring seven categorised climbs; Stage 9 from Morteau to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine with six climbs; and the final stage around le Grand-Bornand in the Alps with a leg breaking seven Cat. 2 climbs in the last 60 km.
