Boonen comes back with a win
Young Belgian star Tom Boonen (Quick.Step-Davitamon) continues to demonstrate excellent form this year, coming back from a four week break to win the first stage of the Tour de Picardie. After receiving an excellent leadout from teammate Stefano Zanini, Boonen won the 190 km stage between Hirson to Doullens in a bunch sprint, beating Stefan Van Dijk (Lotto-Domo) and Sebastien Chavanel (Brioches La Boulangère) to take his sixth win of the season.
"I am very satisfied with my win," explained Boonen. "Once again I must say a big thank you to my teammates who always help to put me in a favourable position to win. Now I have the leader’s jersey. It'll be difficult keeping it until Sunday, but I'll try my best."
The stage was aggressive from the start with Erik Dekker and Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank) being involved in the early moves. But by kilometre 37 it was Bram Tankink (Quick.Step-Davitamon) and Ludovic Auger (Auber 93) who managed to get clear, being chased by Ivailo Gabrovski (Oktos) who eventually caught them after 83 km. By this stage the peloton was 13'25 behind, and the trio lasted together until 20 km to go, when Gabrovski went solo.
With 15 km to go, the Bulgarian had 20 seconds to Auger and Tankink, with the peloton closing in at 2'05. Gabrovski wasn't caught until the final kilometre, as the bunch wound up for a massive sprint. Boonen's team benefited from some good tactics today with one of their men in the break and Boonen was perfectly set up by Zanini for the win.
