Mayo all the way

Three stages. Three distinct messages. All saying in one way or another - "I will be ready and I will be there at the end when it matters".
Iban Mayo is flying - how else can you put it? Yesterday we saw him take a good minute and a half out of the man many regard as the world's best climber on the Alto de Navacerrada. This morning, in a stage destined for a bunch sprint, Mayo attacked with a kilometre to go and showed the peloton a clean pair of heels to cross the line first for the second time in consecutive stages. Then in the afternoon's time trial (on a one off Orbea prototype) carved another 23 seconds out of Heras and much more out of his main rivals to finish second, second in a time trial a mere two seconds behind the stage winner, 20 year old Liberty rider, Luis Sanchez.
In all Iban Mayo picked up the G.C. by a whopping (in the context of a three stage race) advantage of 1.57 over Eladio Jimenez (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme). He won two stages. He won the combination jersey, the points jersey, was second in the time trial and second (as a result of Walter Beneteau's solo break yesterday) in the mountains jersey. Not a bad day at the office after what has been a very softly, softly start to the season.
In the morning's short road stage, Euskaltel controlled the front of the race to neutralise the early break over the final kilometres. Tino Zaballa (Saunier Duval) was the last to be captured with not much more than a kilometre to go. Just under a kilometre to go, the front of the bike race a mass of orange, the yellow jersey jumped through a roundabout and set off, leaving a startled peloton to regain its senses and mount a chase. Mayo's advantage was never huge over the thousand metres, but he fought to keep them at bay all the way to the line, crossing with daylight a good second.
It was a type of win that no one expected and for some signaled that he was trying to create himself some breathing space ahead of the time trial. Euskaltel, as we all know, have never been known for their prowess against the clock, with only Zubeldia previously showing any class.
Come the time trial and the early mark was set by the 20 year old Liberty Seguros rider Luis Sanchez. His closest challenger being for the day his teammate Isidro Nozal, a specialist against the clock. As the others came in, no-one seemed to even come close to putting the mark set by Sanchez in danger. The course was relatively flat, with a little rise towards the end. The major factor was cross and head winds at different points of the out and back course. The climbers Jimenez (Comunidad Valenciana), Buenahora and Cardenas (Cafes Baque) were never going to surpass the time of Sanchez. Heras came in 25 seconds back - again as in the climb to Navacerrada more or less sandwiched between Zubeldia and Laiseka.
Mayo came to the start ramp getting a wobbly hold, as do all the riders when the organisers prefer a model to a beefy bloke with a bit of experience in holding a rider for a standing start. Mechanic Eneko Iturriaga wiped down the wheels on the one and only prototype Orbea time trial bike. A pronounced sloping top tube and some relaxed angles said to have been designed subsequent to Mayo's winter's wind tunnel testing in Italy.
At the turnaround, Mayo stunned everyone by being only 4 seconds behind the young Sanchez. He continued to hold his speed into the testing head/crosswinds and as he entered the final stretches he seemed to be going at a speed that made him appear to be flying in comparison to those that rode immediately before him. Up out of the saddle, up a gear and he put more power on, with 200 metres to go, the move was repeated, out of the saddle and up a gear. He gave it some and time disappeared mere metres from the end - he crossed 3 seconds behind the stage winner Sanchez.
Three stages, three messages. 'I can win on the mountain, I can jump and stay away on the way into town and guess what, I can even do a decent time trial - watch out!'
Mayo's nearest rival in the end nearly two minutes behind on the G.C. Or put another way in around 90 kilometres of racing today - on the bunch and solo, Mayo picked up another minute over the rest of the field to add to the minute he took out of them yesterday. Can he keep it up? Who knows, but this was class, pure and simple.
